Q. On my income tax return I
have always claimed my father
as a dependant.* Last March he
was killed in an auto accident.
How much may I claim for him,
if anything?
A, If your father's income for
the year, up to the date of his
death, was less than $950, you
may claim any amount you
spent for his support during the
year of his death, up to $550
maximum.
Q. Our son has hearing trouble
and we have to take him each
week to a speech clinic where he
has to have special treatment
from a speech therapist. It costs
us between $4 and $5 a week
travelling back and forth to the
clinic. Can we claim a tax
exemption for the cost of
transporting our boy to the
clinic and back every week?
A. No, you may not claim for
the cost of transporting your son
to and from the clinic each
week. The only amount you
may claim is the monies paid to
' either the doctor or to the clinic
for the actual treatment your
son receives.
Q. I use my car at work from
time to time but my employer
does not pay me anything for
the use of the car. When I fill
out my tax form can I claim any
of the expenses incurred
operating this car?
A. If it is necessary for you to
use your car at your own
expense in order to carry out
yolk regular duties, you may be
entitled to deduct a portion of
your car expenses in computing
your income. Your District
Taxation Office will be glad to
help you determine whether you
have a claim and, if so, the
amount of the deduction.
Q. I am a salaried employee and
I have to purchase special
reference books for my work.
Can I claim these as a deduction
for income tax purposes?
A. No. The cost of reference
books is not an allowable
deduction from salary received
as an employee.
Q. On the income tax form there
is a space for date of birth. Is it
necessary for me to give my date
The "wet look" will be
everywhere in 1971, and lighting
for home is one area where it is
expected to make a big splash.
Acrylics are particularly
suited to the bold, bright colours
that are synonymous with this
fashion look. And it is predicted
by Bob Holender, president of
Galazi Lighting Ltd. that acrylics
could well hold 40-45 percent of
the total Canadian Lighting
market in 1971.
Between 25 and 30 companies
will be exhibiting their range of
lighting fixtures to the country's
retailers at Toronto's Canadian
Furniture Mart in January.
These will include the latest
designs in ceramic swags,
exquisite crystal chandeliers,
ultra-modern acrylics, and
traditional favourites ih fine
china and wood.
As with other areas of the
home furnishings field, colour is
the work in lighting for 1971.

You're a lucky man if you've
got some new snow removing
equipinent this year. But
remember, you've also got
another hazard around the
house.
The 53,000 member firms of
the Industrial Accident
Prevention Association are
asking everyone to watch out for
hazards on the job and at home
this month. They have chosen
January for their annual safety
campaign because winter
weather brings so many hazards.
And snow removing is one of
them.
If you've decided this is the
year you're going to get yourself
the right equipment, make sure
you read the owner's manual. If
you have to clean the
equipment, remove obstacles,
adjust it or change position,
make sure you turn off the
power first. When using the
machine, watch out for the
direction of the machine
,discharge, Before uting the
machine, remove any debris that
might be hidden under the
of birth, and•if so, why?
A. Your date of. birth is used for
various purposes, such as
additional identification and
determining liability for Canada
Pension Plan contributions. It is
required information and, like
all other information on your
return, is confidential.
Q. My wife and I are the same
age and this year I qualify for
the age exemption. On my tax
form do I claim $500 age
exemption for my wife as well as
$500 for myself?
A. No. the fact that your wife is
entitled to claim the $500 age
exemption cif she files her own
tax return does not affect the
amount you yourself can claim
as married exernptiOn.-
Q. Is a farmer required to make
Canada Pension Plan deductions
from the wages paid to farm
help?
A. Deductions for the Canada
Pension Plan must be made from
all wages paid for farm labour,
provided the employee is
between 18 and 70 years of age
and has received cash wages of
$250 or more and has also
worked for 25 days or more
during the year for this
employer.
- • Q. I am a trawler fisherman and
the company I work for tells me
that I may claim the cost of
food and clothing (while at sea)
as a deduction from income for
tax purposes. Is this so?
A. Not as a general rule, but
your District Taxation Office
would be able to tell you
whether this would be so in your
particular case.
Q. I have a woodlot on my farm.
Do I have to report on my
income tax as income the sale of
logs from this woodlot?
A. If you are operating the
woodlot as part of your farming
operations, the proceeds from
the sale of lumber, logs, poles or
firewood would form part of
your income. On the other hand,
amounts received by you for
permitting other persons to
remove standing trees from the
woodlot would be considered
nontaxable.
longer are lighting fixtures
considered merely as a means to
an end: today they constitute an
integral part of the whole decor
and design of a room, adding
accent splashes of colour for
impact. Multiple light sources
are as functional as
multi-directional lights, and with
a dimmer system, the entire
mood can be changed at will.
Metal lights are also a
colourful complement to today's
furnishings — gaily painted
metal, and chromed steel for a
touch of sophistication.
Prices vary as much as styles,
and the Furniture Mart will
display full measure in both
categories. The Mart is open to
the public January 14 and 15,
between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and'
is held in the Coliseum,
Automotive, and Industry
buildings in Toronto's
Exhibition Park. Admission is
$1, and transportation is
provided between buildings at
no cost.
discharge of snow. And watch
out for neighbours or children in
front of your machine.
Each year, the 53,000
member firms of I.A.P.A.
conduct an intense program of
activities throughout Ontario to
prevent accidents in industry.
These include a safety drive, a
convention that attracts 4,000
delegates, seminars between
unions, government and
man agement representatives,
workshops, training couises,
in-plant study groups, family
rallies and audio-visual
presentations, all of which
combine to promote the
prevention of accidents.
The Association promotes its
activities through committees
made up of more than 1,000
volunteers from industiy. They
serve either through separate
industrial classes -or through
geographical divisions and
seetions.
