For plant hobbyists, growing
plants under artificial light opens
up a new world, which is not
confined to the sun room or
garden, but can be carried out
under conditions that prevail in
dark apartments and in sunless
basements.
Under such light you can
grow a great range of plants all
year round as a display in your
living room; or you can use the
basement as a room in which to
grow flowering plants for display
when they are in full bloom.
You can also, grow sturdy
seedlings for use in your outdoor
garden or propagate plants for
your landscape requirements.
If your plants are to be grown
entirely under lights, the kind of
light source, the 'brightness and
the period of illumination are
extremely important,
Most home gardeners prefer
the cool-white fluorescent lamps
for growing seedlings or a
mixture of one warm-white and
one cool-white for growing
plants. For an enclosed or partly
enclosed boX set-up, cool-white
lamps are,the, ,most practicable.
Newer types of fluorescent tubes
manufactiirerk-for this purpose
should' aisq considered, for
some of, ,thhie provide the
necessary i4fra red light for
increased 'flowering while others
last consideAibly longer and are
just as effective as the ordinary
types.
Once•you have decided upon
the type,of tube to use, choose
the size and' number suitable to
your needs:' Two 40 watt,
four-foot itibqa in one fixture
will light an Ares about 52 by 18
inches, ,Tho -number of tubes
required is governed by the size
of the arch t(1 be lighted.
An automatic timing device
will prove to be a very good
investment for those who must
be away from home as well as
for people who are just plain
forgetful. This device will
automatically switch the lights
on and off according to any
desired settings.
As the plants grow, it will be
necessary to either lower the
plants or raise the lights. This
may be done by arranging the
light fixtures on chains and
pulleys, or the pots may be
stood on blocks or brickS, which
are removed one by one as the
plants grow.
Most plants and light gardens
need a light period of 14 to 15
hours each day. All plants
should be kept at least sic inches
from the tulips. Most will grow
hest when kept i2 inches away.
Plants that need high light
intensity should be kept with
their topmost leaves six inches
from the latnps, medium ones
from 12 ti 18 inches and those
with low intensities could be as
low as three feet. It is probably
questionable whether this last
group needs lights at all, except
for that which prevails in most
living rooms.
When selecting plants for
your light garden you had better
choose kinds that are adaptable
to the kind and amount of light
you are able to supply. The
Chinese evergreen, aspidistra,
dieffenbachia, dracaena and
philodendron require a low light
intensity of about 50
candlepower; anthuriums, Rex
begonias, bromeliads, grape ivies,
kangaroo vines and similar plants
will grow with medium light
intensity or from 100 to 500
footcandles; African violets,
everlasting begonia, wax
begonia, episcia, gloxinias,
English ivy, hoya, impatiens,
marigold and salvia need a bright
light intensity of 500 to 1,000
footcandles. After growing the
plants under lights for awhile it
will be possible to tell whether
the intensity is satisfactory. If
the light intensity is too low, the
plants Will grow slowly, stems
will be thin, weak and soft,
leaves will be small and
flowering will be reduced. If the
light intensity is too high, the
leaves may become bleached or
discolored.
All plants that go into the
indoor garden should be in clay
pots for these allOw better air
circulation and are not likely to
become waterlogged. Bagged
potting soil sold in most stores is
satisfactory but you can make
your own from equal parts (A)
good garden soil, (B) sand or
perlite and (C) peat moss, to
which one tablespoon of
superphosphate and one
tablespoon of limestone should
be added to each gallon of soil.
Set the plants at the correct
distance from the lights
according to the intensities

wanted. if you have erected a
bench for growing plants, make
sure the sides are tall _enough to
allow filling in around the pots
with sphagnum moss, pea size
gravel or marble chips.
As soon as you put plants in
the light garden adjust them to
their new environment with a
good watering, Then allow them
to dry out thouroughly before
watering again.
To raise the humidity of the
air around the plants wet the
moss or stones surrounding the
pots, When watering plants,
avoid getting any water on the
lamp fixtures and planter, If
your light set-up is in the
basement and you wish to grow
plants for display elsewhere I
would recommend building a
simple bog, that will aid in
controlling the humidity and the
temperature. Paint the inside of
the four sides with glossy white
paint and arrange to have the
front side on hinges so that the
plants may be taken care of. At
one end fasten a piece of strap
iron with a saw-tooth edge, that
will allow the side to be opened
to admit air and regulate the
temperature.
Every two to four weeks
water the plants in your garden
with a solution of water-soluble
fertilizer used at the
concentration recommended on
the label. Fertilize only when
the plants are actively growing
and when tikey are not too dry.
