The marriage Will take, place early in October. Skye is a remote arid beautiful island on the Northwest Coast of Scotland with a population of- about 8500. Sometimes called the Winged Isle, because no part is more than four miles from the •sea, it is essentially a blue • is? land but all the colons of the rainbow are in a Skye lahdscape, blue,. Mfolet, indigo, turquoise, rose and gold with , the mist op the-mountains-giving all a mag- ical effect. It has no railroad and transport is by buses, lorries and cars.• ’■ ’? ' •■•' On the western coast one finds the ofdest inhabited -castle, in Scotland and the most romantic —Dun vegan Castle, built over a thousand years ago. This ancient pile standing on its rocky proin- ontory on Loch Dunvegan* has been the home of the MacLeod chiefs for cehturies. At one time the sea surrounded the castle and up till 1812 a drawbridge was used but the sea has receded and a newer wing connects the castle With the land. The long line of male succession was broken with, the death of the chiefs son - in the Black Watch in 1915 and the present chief, Mrs. Flora, Mac Leod of MacLeod, silver haired and still bonny at 74, worthily upholds the fine traditions of the clan. Her brilliance of intellect andvcharming and.gracious per? sonality, combined—with convert sational gifts has made her great ly ’ beloved and admired, s Her visits to Canada and United JStates_„ received wide publicity.. She. will be succeeded by one of thev t7?year?old twin sons of her daughter, Mrs. Wolrige Gordoii. John adopted the traditional name; of the clan, much to the pride of his^grahdmother and is known as John MacLeod Young er of MacLeod. He will become the 29th Chief and when in Can ada last year won a gold medal for the best dressed lad or lass in MacLeod tartan. His brother Patrick won two silver medals for piping. v 7 .. *4 ! dFor three hundred yeariL the LOUGHEED—in Wingham. For Hay .Fever. lege at Borijeraig, in full view of Dim vegan Castle, set the stand ard of piping for all Scotland. They were, the recognized auth orities on pipe music, eminent as composers, .as players and as teachers. _It took seven years at the college to rhake a piper and the walk around the rocky head land Where they practised is still i to be. seen. A cairn marks the site of the college: . It is interesting—to__note/thaX guests at the Castle nowadays report their suite of roortis to jbe as spacious and elegant as in the best of modern hotels. From tur ret to basement it has been mod ernized with steam heat, fixtures end equipment that the ancient chiefs could not irriagine. In the stately dining room, one of the treasurers is a massive oak side board dated 1606: The drawing room which was the ancient. Ban queting Hall with Walls nine feet thick/has been pierced by mod ern windows. Here, are preserved priceless treasufbffe of the Clan —The Fairy Flag reputed by ex perts to -fee over 1000 years old and to be made of silk of Cru? sader origin, a loving cup pre? sented to a Chief by thie King of Ulster in 990; a curious Norweg ian horn, ten centuries old. From- 4he^all^oMheuiihingu:ohm4M)X^ traits of former chiefs and their wives painted by well known masters, look down. To this cdl- lectidn was added last year a painting of the present chief, done by the President of the Royal Scottish Academy, a gift by sub scription from members of the Clan in Great Britain, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chili, France, Hawaii, .Holland, New Zealand,, Rhodesia, South Africa, Unganda, United States arid Skye. The Clan motto is “Hold Fast’’ and in a world torn by strife and unstable as ours it is’ very . im- portant to keep that spirit alive. Skye Week (celebrated yearly the last week in May) had this year ^official representatives from Canada, India, South Africa and New Zealand* the close proxim- ity of the CornatiQn making it impossible for some1 Dominion representatives to attend. Skye folk gave a hearty welcome to citizens of i all the English speak? ing -world-and on “MacLeod and. Overseas Day” 400 people had tea at the Castle as guests of the Chief Messages of goodwill to the island and its people were broughtandthefollowinggreet- ing sent by Miss Dean MacLeod, Lucknow, was warmly acknow-, ledged. / Greetings To Skye Here’s to the misty island blue . That bears the name of Skye, - The mystic land, the fairy land I’d see before I die! For something of its magic spell Was carried o’er the sea And mingled with my childhood dreams, . A heritage to me. Forefather’s land I have hot seen I yet have touched thy shore, And heather hills and bracken . moors , In fancy wandered o’er! I’ve trod Dunvegan’s ancient halls And seen the Fairy Flag ., And mused Upon the storied past When valour did not lag. I’ve seen the “Tables of Mac- Leod” •’ .......... Cut by some broad claymore And viewed the headland- by the loch ' Where pipers played of yore. Past silver birch and rowan tree I’ve wandered oh and caught _The_maiesty of jagged peaks By mighty Coolins brought. O island blue in sapphire sea My thoughts are on thee met Arid long may Heaven smile on thee t God’s peace be on thee set! , From Canada, fair Canada This greeting staunch and true Across the miles of land and sea Across the sky to you!
