LYLA TAYLOR TO
END YWCA WORK
A valuable; service of .over
twenty years to the Detroit
Y.W.C.A. will be terminated in
late summer upon the retirement
of Miss Lyla Taylor, daughter of
the .late Mr, and Mrs, Wm: J,
Taylor -pf Lucknow. e
Special, tribute was paid Miss1
Taylor, recently at a banquet of
civic /arid community leaders,
injarking sixty years of service of
fhe Y.W.’ in the Michigan Me^
trJpolis, Sincev 1930 Miss Taylor
has been director of its Friendly
Service department.
Ah article frdin -a' Detroit paper
reads in part as follows:/ ,
Miss Taylor Will leave her post
next/September. Now, she will
remembers that her first day at
ftthe YWCA was a cold and bitter
one in February, 1930. Her first
duties were to interview an^ de-,
vise quick plans for numbers of
unattached women arid girls, des
perately in need of help. You
see, there was another depres
sion. t .
Miss,Taylor was studying social
work at Wayne University, and
her first assignment at the YW
was on a three-day-a-week basis
as a research project. But the
depression deepened, the cries for
help came louder and she found,
she had to abandon her academic
work a.t /Wayne and devote her
self completely to her duties at
the YW. .
Theses were various and de
manding! Public einpioyment ser
vices at the time were , inadequate
and the Friendly Service Depart
ment organized its own employ
ment service. Through this em-
ployment bureaur-Miss Tayloi-
made placements wherever poss
ible—ihx factories, stores a n a
homes.
"The-problem—was-difficult-and-
long-continned, but this courag
eous woman stayed, with it until
the economic situation lefted, and
/ eVen beyond. .
Employment services are
longer a part of her work, but
girls have other problems: A
family situation that may grow
more and.more confused as a/girl
tries to work it but alone; a brok
en love affair! making friends in
a big. city.
; Nobody can estimate the help
she^has beeri to bewildered young
womanhood.*
Lyla Taylor physically is ^mall
(a little wom^n .with a big heart).
But she is vivacious and seem
ingly—tireless?—with--an—abiding-
sense of humor. She finds the sil
ver lining’ in the darkest cloud
and is quick to help a thwarted'
and frustrated girL to gain con-
fidence,..;.......... z/'//.
Before she came to Detroit, she
had studied landscape architect
ure in Groton, Mass.'
