VVINiER OF 1890 WAS
MUCH LIKE THIS ONE
..The mild winter which we have
fen enjoying this year caused
J; M. Greer to start scanning the
weather records and he found
that back in 1890, the riaonths of
Japuary and February. were
milder and brought less snow and
more rain. \ , 1
In January 1890 the mercury
got up to 56 degrees and on two
days reached. 54 degrees..; The
low was 7 degrees. Pansies were
in Ibloorn and were picked, from
an open garden on January 12fh-
Snowfall totalled 15 inches, about
the same as this year, but there
was. more rain, 3.69 inches.
. The mild weather. continued in
February of .’90, with highs*, of
58 and 56 degrees> and pansies
were still bloomings The coldest
was 4 . above. There was' only 12
inches of snow as coriipared with
28 inches this year.. ■. . I
And then came March! On the
6th- it was 9 below;, the 7th, 14
below and the 8th, 8 below.
Snowfall totalled 25 inches, prac
tically as much as in- the two.,
preceding 'rnroriths, . •. *
I . The official records show that
.there has .been nothing since to
equal the record of January and
February of 1890.
Speaking of records, Mr.
Greer’s perusuaT showed that the
lightest srioxyfail on record for
February was 4.5 inches in 1888,
and 63.5 inches in 1889.
