The HST moved the onus for providing for the country from the backs of businesses to the backs of “normal people”. “They did all this in a time when people are earning, with inflation, the same amount they were earning in 1991,” she said. “Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officers, by 3 p.m. on January 1 of any year, take home the salary that these people make in a year.” She stated that policies and changes would come that would put people first. Exact actions outlined by Horwath included taking HST off home heating and electrical bills, supporting rural Ontario through legislation, recreating the Green Energy Act with the interest of the farmers and residents at its heart instead of companies and repealing the decision that is leading to the closure of the jail in Walkerton. Both stated that the Green Energy Act focused too much on the companies and businesses involved and not enough on the people that are to be affected. Horwath stated that, as she had been a community organizer before she became a politician, she knew the importance of listening to people before making tough decisions, a process that was absent from the Green Energy Act. “The government wanted headlines,” she said. “The Green Energy Act was all about private dollars. We want to change whose interest green energy is created in.” Robertson agreed, stating that community consultation was key, and that, in saying that, he meant more than a postcard being dropped in people’s mail. Robertson ran for the NDP during the last Federal election in 2010 and came in second for the Huron- Bruce riding, being beat out by incumbent Progressive-Conserv- ative Ben Lobb.
