The Citizen, 2011-08-25, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2011.Library decision to be made at next council meetingHuron East Council could moveforward on the Brussels Library as
soon as its Sept. 6 meeting.
After a July request by Deputy-
Mayor Joe Steffler to revisit the
subject, Mayor Bernie MacLellan
said at Huron East Council’s August
16 meeting something needed to be
done and another public meeting
wasn’t necessary.
He said at this point there would
be no new information to be brought
forward, so a public meeting is
unnecessary.
Brussels Councillor David Blaney
agreed and proposed what he called
“something radical” saying that
perhaps councillors should simply
make the decision with the
information and public input they
already have.
Earlier this year there had been
discussion about mailing out surveyforms to Brussels residents andlibrary users. However, formerClerk-Administrator JackMcLachlan and Blaney could not
reach a consensus on the wording of
the forms, MacLellan said, and
therefore the forms were never made
and never sent out.
“We should make a decision and
move on,” MacLellan said.
MacLellan said Morris-Turnberry
councillors were becoming
impatient after having dedicated
$100,000 to the project over two
years ago. He said the councillors
don’t have a preference one way or
another, just that they’d prefer that
the decision is made sooner rather
than later.
“As soon as we know I should
appear at Morris-Turnberry
Council,” MacLellan said. “They’ve
already raised their part and they’re a
little uncomfortable and they would
like us to get moving.”MacLellan also mentioned anoption that had been discussedearlier, where the library could bemoved into the Brussels Public
School building after the school is
closed next year. The building is
accessible, MacLellan said, and
there has already been discussion
with the Avon Maitland District
School Board about purchasing the
building and the land back.
On the flip side, however,
MacLellan said he has heard from
several people who have said taking
the library off of the Brussels main
street would be a devastating blow to
an already decimated main street in
the village.
“I would hate to see another
vacant building on the main street in
Brussels,” MacLellan said.
Steffler agreed, saying that taking
the library off the main street would
have a huge effect on Brussels.
MacLellan said that whileBrussels is performing welleconomically, the main street givespeople the impression that it’s not.“If we took the library off of main
street there would be a big effect,”
Steffler said. “It should stay where it
is and we should renovate it.”
Councillor Bill Siemon, who also
sits on the Huron County Library
Board, said he asked former Huron
County Librarian Beth Ross what
she felt council should do with the
library before she retired and she
said it should be renovated. Siemon,
however, said he would only support
doing what the people of Brussels
wanted.
“We aren’t going to do anything
the people of Brussels don’t want,”
Siemon said. “It’s the people of
Brussels that live there, so it should
be up to them.”
Siemon added that it was his
personal opinion that the library
should stay on main street, sayingthat his mind had been changedsince the last public meeting.“We can’t afford to lose thatedifice on main street in Brussels,”
he said, “and that’s a big flip-flop.”
Blaney said there were also
fundraising concerns that had to be
taken into account when the decision
is being made. Because a certain
amount of money is expected from
the residents of Brussels, Blaney
said, what they will contribute
should be taken into account.
“From what I’ve heard, for a
renovation people will contribute,
but for a new building they won’t,”
he said. “A renovation could cost
more money, but it could cost us as a
council less because of donations.”
Grey Councillor Dianne Diehl
said the location was important for
more than for more than economic
reasons, saying that its current

PLAN NUMBER 5-3-672 THREE-BEDROOM BUNGALOW
Multiple gables, each with Tudor-style cross-bracing, in addition to stone-based pilasters and a front veranda, lend this three-bedroom
bungalow character and appeal.
The covered entry leads to a foyer with a vaulted ceiling, separated from the rest of the home by an archway. Directly ahead, past a
coat closet, an angled corridor leads to the great room, dining area and kitchen, all sharing a vaulted ceiling.
The great room’s gas fireplace, located in a corner, will cast its cosy glow as far as the dining area and kitchen. A doorway from the
dining area, which overlooks the garden, leads to a partly-covered patio.
The kitchen is separated from the dining area and great room by a six-sided island with a five-seat eating bar on one side. The window
over the double sink boasts an extra-wide sill, ideal for growing pots of herbs. The L-shaped counter configuration promises efficiency,
and a large walk-in pantry provides extra storage space. A phone desk adjacent to the pantry is a thoughtful touch.
The spacious master suite includes an ensuite bathroom with double basins, a shower stall and a soaker tub with a tiled surround. A
window seat overlooks the back garden. A display case near the room’s entrance will provide an ideal spot to show off collectibles. A roomy
walk-in closet offers space for even the most fashion-conscious couple’s clothing and accessories.
The two secondary bedrooms each include a window with an extra-wide sill and share a three-piece bath.
From the double garage, there is handy access to the laundry room as well as a powder room located just outside the great room.
This home measures 50 feet, two inches wide by 54 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,738 square feet of living space. Ceilings are
nine feet high throughout, except where otherwise indicated.
