He puts us in our right place!
(J.C. Ryle, “Having the Spirit”)
“When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment.”
(John 16:8)
“All who have the Spirit are convinced by Him of sin.
He alone can open a man’s eyes to the real extent of his guilt and corruption before God.
He always does this when He comes into the soul. He puts us in our right place! He
shows us the vileness of our own hearts, and makes us cry with the publican, “God be
merciful to me a sinner!” He pulls down those proud, self-righteous, self-justifying
notions with which we are all born--and makes us feel as we ought to feel--“I am a
sinful man, and I deserve to be in hell!”
Sin is no more pleasant to those who are taught by the Spirit. It is their sorrow when
tempted by it. It is their shame when they are overtaken by it. Their desire is to be free
from it altogether. Their happiest times are when they are enabled to walk most closely
with God. Their saddest times are when they are furthest off from Him.

Ushering worshippers at BlythUnited Church on Sunday, Aug. 21were Terry Richmond and LavernClark. Floyd Herman was music
director. Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church and drew their
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin.
Special mention was made that
the UCW will be making turkey pies
on Sept. 12. If you wish to order call
Joann MacDonald at 519-523-9274.
The UCW will be starting their
meetings for the coming year on
Thursday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. in the
church parlour.
There is a youth retreat at North
Street United Church on Friday,
Sept. 16 and Sat., Sept. 17 for
Grades 5-8 with high school
students leading.
The call to worship, “Holy Spirit
Come” was sung followed by the
prayer of approach and the singing
of the first hymn, “We Praise You, O
God.” The scripture reading was
from Psalm 138 repeated
responsively with the congregation
singing the refrain, “Your Word is a
lamp for my feet and a light for my
path.”
Rev.Clark’s message to the
congregation was “So much left to
say in 10 minutes or less.” The
Psalms are the centre of our faith.
The Psalms touch every facet of ourlives whether we are farmers, rulers, the rich or the poor. The Psalmswere written some 3,000 years ago
and still have a message for us in
today’s society.
The congregation sang verses
from Psalms 90, 91 and 100.
In Scotland the Book of Psalms is
the only hymn book they have and
in the olden days the hymns were
sung without accompanying music.
It was very hard for the Scottish
people to accept the change when an
organ was introduced. just as the
hymns have changed in the way we
sing them our faith remains the
same. When we need God, He is
always there for us. Our faith in God
will get us through some trying
times. God cares for everyone no
matter what our status is. Whether
we are rich or poor, young or old.
God creates a purpose for us and
helps us attain that purpose.
Many of our groups of people,
like the Lions Club, the Legion and
many church groups are fading
away. Most of the members are 50
years of age and older. In order to
bring younger members into these
groups we must listen to what they
have to say and to change along
with them. Take the time to find the
Psalm that represents you and sing it
loud so others can hear. The offering was receivedfollowed by the offertory response, the prayer of dedication, the prayers
for the world and the singing of The
Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn was
the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord Is My
Shepherd.” The commission and
benediction was followed by the
“amen” response.
Everyone was invited for coffee,
treats and to visit with one another.

FROM BLYTH
Toronto Model A Club tours Blyth as part of trip
The Model A Owners of Canada
Inc. visited Blyth over the weekend
as part of the Toronto-based group’s
visit to Southwestern Ontario.
“We were meeting and staying in
Goderich,” club member Jim
McGinn said. “Some of us arrived
Thursday morning, and we’ll be
leaving Sunday morning.”
McGinn said that the group,
which boasts nearly 300 members,
spends its time in the summer
making trips similar to the one to
Goderich and visiting surrounding
towns.
Each member drives a Ford Model
A car which, according to McGinn,
were manufactured between 1927
and 1931.
The group has very strict practices
regarding its members’ travel,
McGinn said. They travel at
approximately 40 miles an hour and,
if any of them have a mechanical
problem, they, and a member of the
group who keeps general parts, will
pull over to try and remedy the
situation, allowing the group to
continue travelling.
McGinn said that the majority of
the members are from the Greater
Toronto Area (GTA), but some, like
himself, are from North Bay.
The group could be seen parking
in front of Bainton’s Old Mill on
Westmoreland Street as well as up
and down Blyth’s main street later in
the day.

Many people are feeling sympathy
for the people of Goderich as they
try to clean up the mess that a
tornado caused approximately
around 4 p.m. on Sunday. There are
many trees down around the Square
and many old buildings demolished.
It will take a long time to clean up
the mess.
