THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011.NDP nomination meeting to be held in BrusselsThis year marks the 50thanniversary of the NDP in Canada and in Huron- Bruce. How fitting itis then that the Huron-Bruce NDP holds the nomination of its candidatefor this fall’s provincial election in the hometown of its first NDPcandidate, J. Carl Hemingway. In thetime of McCarthyism, candidates like Hemingway took many risks to run for the fledgling party in the 1962 Federal election. The story goes that an arsonist, sent from Toronto to teach him a lesson, torched a neighbour’s barn by mistake. It took incredible courage for Carl to stand up for his convictions and run again federally in 1965. His strength of character resulted in the germination and growth of the NDP in Huron-Bruce. Since that time many more committed members have helped the party to grow and flourish. In choosing Brussels for the nomination meeting, on this 50th anniversary of the party, the Huron- Bruce NDP is acknowledging that past, while looking forward. “Mr. Hemingway stood for a government that worked for people. Those issues are as relevant today as they were in 1961,” says Huron- Bruce NDP President Willi Laurie. “With Dalton McGuinty we have a government that has written off rural Ontario; that funds our schools with an outdated funding model, placing rural communities at risk. We have a McGuinty government that has run roughshod over local communities in its energy policies. And we have a McGuinty government that refuses to make life more affordable by removing the HST from your hydro bill or at the gas pump. The status quo is not working – we need change in Ontario.” The Huron Bruce nomination meeting will be taking place on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Brussels Legion located at 620 Turnberry Street, Brussels, N0G 1H0 with anafternoon kick-off time of 4 p.m.While it is still tentative, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is expected to be in attendance. As with all NDP meetings, all are welcome to attend the Nomination meeting. Only members in good standing may vote. At this point the only declared candidate is Grant Robertson. “People have come to know Grant as a hard working, independent person who cares deeply about these issues and putting the people of Huron- Bruce first,” says Laurie. “Many people don’t realize that Grant is not only well-regarded here at home, but also across the province and nationally, and in particular, by NDP leaders Jack Layton and Andrea Horwath. Before anyone else was really talking about the issue, Grant’s early work on the dangers of privatized power had been recognized both within the NDP and outside it.” More recently Grant has spoken out on the local energy concerns, and Robertson has the ear of the provincial leader on these issues. “Grant is a leader on so many fronts and we are delighted that he has decided to seek the nomination,” says Laurie. “In the last Federal election, Grant placed within the top third of all NDP results in Ontario. This bodes well for an exciting provincial election and for the possibilities of meaningful change in Huron- Bruce.” For more information contact Willi Laurie, President, Huron- Bruce NDP at 519-482-9265 or wlaurie@tcc.on.ca HURON PIONEER THRESHER AND HOBBY ASSOCIATION INC. 50th Reunion ~ Thresher Campgrounds, Blyth For more info call 519-523-9100 www.blythsteamshow.on.ca You’re Invited to the Kick-Off Celebration September 3! 50th Anniversary Parade September 10 Downtown Blyth Parade starts at 11 am To register your float www.blythsteamshow.on.ca Walton RoadMi l l S t .
