MPP Mitchell opens Goderich office
Historian now focuses on First World War
Over 50 people came to 394
Huron Rd in Goderich last week to
help Carol Mitchell, the Liberal
Candidate for Huron-Bruce, open
her central campaign office and
launch her re-election campaign for
the upcoming Oct. 6 election.
Mitchell, surrounded by family
and supporters, brought forward the
message that Huron-Bruce had seen
record investment over the past eight
years and the importance of
continuing to build on the riding’s
progress by supporting public health
care, growing the economy and
creating jobs, supporting farmers,
protecting the environment and
continuing to invest in education.
Among the key accomplishments
Mitchell cited in the riding over the
past eight years included:
• Seven New Family Health Teams
– Providing more access to health
care with 50 more doctors, more
health professionals and over 60,000
patients served
• Strengthening the Economy – A
long-term energy plan secures the
future of Bruce Power including
4,000 full-time jobs and 3,000
construction jobs.
• Strong Support for Farmers –
Strengthening supply manage-ment
and providing permanent risk
management programs to give
farmers predictability, bankability
and stability. Programs created by
farmers for farmers.
• Green Energy Leadership –
Creating cleaner air for children and
grandchildren, locally more than
200 solar projects and 180 wind
turbines.
• Full Day Kindergarten – Giving
children the best start in their
education. Program offered in 11
schools this fall and all schools by
2014.
Mitchell told her supporters that
they could count on the fact that she
will continue to work as hard over
the next four years as she has over
the past eight to continue to deliver
to ensure Huron-Bruce remains a
prosperous place to work and live.
“I am dedicated to strengthening
our rural communities and creating
new opportunities in Huron-Bruce.
This is where I grew up, started a
business and raised a family,” said
Mitchell. “My years of experience in
municipal and provincial
government have prepared me for
the hard work I know is necessary to
get results.”
Mitchell also officially launched
her campaign website at
votecarolmitchell.ca where residents
can go on and get more information
about Mitchell and how to become
involved in her campaign.
Huron-Bruce residents can also
contact Carol’s campaign office at 1-
855-421-3020 or locally at 226-421-

After a successful run of three
printings in two years, Goderich
author and historian Jim Rutledge is
moving on from World War II and
focusing on the soldiers Huron
County sent to World War I.
Rutledge’s first collection, The
Men of Huron: A Book of Honour
and Remembrance 1939-1946
celebrated the lives and sacrifices of
over 200 soldiers from Huron
County who gave their lives.
In his second book, A Directory of
The Heroes of Huron County –
1914-1921: A Book of Honour and
Remembrance, Rutledge will focus
on World War I, a conflict that saw
well over double the number of
Huron County soldiers lose their
lives.
In his first book he named over
200 soldiers and for his second he
knows of nearly 500 soldiers who
gave their lives from Huron County.
For this book, Rutledge will be
travelling to Europe (France and
Belgium) in order to photograph as
many headstones as he can find in atrue form of hands-on research. Hewill also be travelling to the National
Archives in Ottawa for more
extensive research.
While there, he’ll be taking
pictures for the book, which he
hopes to publish sometime in 2013
or 2014, but he’ll also be leaving a
little something behind as well.
Last Friday Rutledge met with
Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell
who announced that the Provincial
Government would be assisting him
in his endeavour by donating 500
Ontario flags to him. He plans on
leaving the flags, along with a
Canadian flag at every Huron
County gravesite he can find abroad.
The announcement was made at
the Clinton Legion last Friday
morning.
Mitchell said it was tough to
fathom the amount of work Rutledge
had put into the project, first with the
World War II book and now with the
new collection.
“I really was honoured that Jim
came forward to us with this,”
Mitchell said.
Rutledge is currently working on
researching fallen soldiers from
World War I who hailed from Huron
County. He says it has been difficult
because cenotaphs are missing
names and they also include the
names of soldiers who returned from
battle only to die years later.
He is currently working with a
research partner from the Lucan
area.
Rutledge will have a booth at the
Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association’s annual reunion in
Blyth this September, the Goderich
Christmas craft show in November
and the Seaforth Collectibles, Craft
and Keepsake Show in late
November.
Rutledge, however, is actively
seeking information from the public
on any soldier who may have served
and died in battle during World War
I.
Anyone with any information on
any of the following soldiers is asked
to contact Rutledge by calling him at
(519) 524-1808 or by e-mail at
bookofhonour3946 @gmail.com
