Brussels softball player named
MVP of national champions
Ty Sebastian of Brussels was
named MVP on the best U19
softball team in Canada.
Fresh off their win at the Ontario
Amateur Softball Association
(OASA) Midget Fastball
Eliminations in July, the
Wiarton Red Devils and
Brussels’ Ty Sebastian were
crowned the top softball team in
Canada at the 2011 Pepsi U19
Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch
Championship in New Brunswick
last weekend.
Sebastian was named the MVP
after his team beat the Stratford
Memorials to clinch the top spot in
the nation.
“It was a really good
competition,” Sebastian said. “Our
goal as a team was just to make it to
nationals and, with the win, we
exceeded that goal and became the
top in the country.”
Sebastian and two other players
on his team alternated as pitchers,
and, during the final game,
Sebastian played third base.
While he feels he did well
throughout the tournament as a
pitcher, he thinks that the MVP
award could also be due to his
performance at the plate.
“I went seven for 10 at bats,” he
said.
The tournament, which ran from
August 8 to 14, saw the Wiarton Red
Devils play seven elimination games
and win six of them, putting them in
second place in their pool.
The Red Devils first played and
beat a Newfoundland team that
topped its own round robin pool in
the elimination round.
That win put Sebastian and his
teammates into the semi-finals.
From there, Wiarton topped an
Albertan team and then faced off
against Stratford in the finals where
they were eventually crowned as
champions.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club welcomed some much-needed
rain this past week. The wet weather
put a damper on some play but it is
great to see the grass returning to
normal green condition.
On Tuesday around 25 ladies
played scattered throughout a nice
sunny day. The gals always enjoy
having new golfers join them and
are out for a few good laughs and a
fun time.
On Aug. 9 the Wednesday
morning senior men came to play on
a stormy wet morning that sent
many of the boys home but the 12
dedicated diehards that hung around
were able to play only minutes after
the rain ended. Doug Vanderwoude
took home low net honour with
Grant Currie second and Brian
Skinn, third. Skinn and
Vanderwoude also tied for low
gross.
The Thursday night men had a
terrific night again for golf and 65
took advantage of the great weather.
Bill Robinson fired a 39 for low
score for the night. The closest to
the pin winners were Don Edgar and
Ed Collinson while Dennis Knox,
Ray Walker and Doug (Shorty)
Long won longest putt awards. Dave
Bartman had a mammoth drive on
hole four to win the longest drive
prize with Ross Gibson, John
Nicholson, Ben Blackwell and Bob
Foxton all taking hidden score
honours.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
With the days getting shorter it is
hard to believe the summer is
winding down. The club is about to
kick off some tournaments with the
lefty/righty Ryder Cup to take place
on Saturday, Aug. 27 and the John
Mallick memorial senior event to be
held on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Back-to-back-to-back home runs
helped the Wingham Hitmen
overcome a 3-1 deficit and go on to
defeat the Blyth Barons
7-3 in a Huron County Fastball
League game played last Friday in
Blyth.
Darcey Cook and Mike Kerr each
had a double and single for the
Barons, with Mike Bromley rapping
out three singles. Chris Stewart and
Ryan Clancy contributed one single
apiece in a losing effort.
Cook went the distance on the
mound for the Barons.
Veteran player Mike McDonald
said the Wingham bats came alive
during the game. “It was a good
fastball game,” he said.
McDonald said Blyth had great
pitching from Darcey Cook. “We
had a couple big hitters at the plate
tonight,” he said.
The next game for the Barons is
Friday when they host the Exeter
Braves beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the
Blyth ball park.
