PAGE 7.Twelve new members welcomedto the Over-80 birthday event Once again the annual Over-80 birthday celebration party was held at the Belgrave United Church with 12 new celebrants, others over 80, family and friends gathered to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and visiting. Mary McIntosh played old- time musical numbers as guests arrived. Muriel Coultes welcomed everyone and read a poem “Friendship”. Mackenzie Wightman played two piano solos, after which Mrs. Coultes gave all those present at “SAT” test, which had been given to 16 year olds. Their answer created a lot of amusement and made all wonder how the teens passed their tests. Nancy Jardin gave two readings and Judith Hess played a piano solo. The next reading was on how to do the “Warshing Clothes Recipe” as given by a grandmother to a new bride many years ago. This was followed by solos by Bill Coultes. Mrs. McIntosh played several numbers and the group sang along. Elly Dow entertained with some anecdotes on growing older and said the grace before cake and ice cream was served. Beryl McGowan was the lucky new celebrant to blow out the candles on the cake. Louise Bosman, now of Goderich, thanked the program committee for the guest afternoon. The community congratulates Chris, Susan and Hayden Jamieson on the birth of Rory William arriving on Aug. 7 in Stratford General Hospital weighing 8 lbs. 14 oz. and 21 1/4 inches long. On Monday, Aug. 8, Belgrave was a popular place as 114 vintage cards with over 300 people arrived at the home of John Looser to view his many birdhouses and bird feeders and taking many pictures. They were fascinated by the unusual structures and designs and with one particular birdhouse seven feet high and seven feet wide with five floors. Many of the homes have been occupied as soon as he has finished building them. Over the past two years he has had over 3,000 people stopping by. In addition to selling birdhouses in the fall he would like to approach the schools to inspire the students and given them an insight into the building of a birdhouse. The community wishes to congratulate Karrin Marks and Shane Davenport who were married on Saturday, Aug. 13 in the Belgrave United Church. Marine misfortune Many banks throughout Huron County, like this one between Belgrave and Brussels, played host to a scene like that above. Dead fish were being washed ashore and Mathew Shetler of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, working on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources, stated that, upon inspection, the deaths were likely a result of low rainfall and high temperatures. Shetler believes there was nothing unnatural about the presence of the dead fish. To start the meeting off, Marg told members all about her pasture-based sheep farm. The sheep on a pasture- based farm stay outside all the time eating grass, even in the winter. Then members toured the farm on a hay ride. Marg explained the finer points about having sheep out all year as members toured the farm. Once the tour was finished, members were introduced to Dr. Claire, a veterinarian. She conducted a post-mortem on a pig and a lamb. A post-mortem is when a veterinarian looks at an animal’s insides to diagnose the cause of death. After the post-mortem, the meeting ended with the 4-H motto, “Learn To Do By Doing”.
