(Aislinn Bremner photo) At the BranchAmbassadors judgedat Brussels Legion By Jo-Ann McDonald Last week was quiet around the Brussels Legion Branch but the weekend made up for it. The fish fry crew was away to Mitchell to feed nearly 300 for the Mitchell Lions Club. It was lovely near the river with nice shade trees and a breeze blowing. The crew included Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald, Greg Wilson, Lisa, Mabel and Sharon Glanville, Deb Caan and new recruit Julie Post. A great job was done by all. The District sports meeting was held at the Branch on Saturday morning. There were about 40 in attendance to go over last year’s results and to plan for the 2011/2012 year of sports events for the Legions. Sports Chairman Comrade Rick McDonald was in attendance for the Branch. Jo-Ann McDonald and Melody White served lunch for the group. The Branch donated the use of the hall for the Ambassador of the Fair competition held Saturday night. The four vying for the title arrived around 3 p.m. for the afternoon activities, interviews and talking with last year’s Ambassador Morgan Deitner. They enjoyed a roast beef dinner provided by Jo-Ann and Melody before the evening part of the event started. It was a great turnout with nearly 100 folks enjoying the speeches of the young people. The new Ambassador is Hannah McCutcheon. Congratulations to her and to the other contestants Colleen Egger, Matt Cardiff and Natalie White, who was sponsored by Branch 218. This weekend the Branch is running the food booth for the ball tournament and any Comrade with some extra time would be appreciated to stop in and help the work crew, even to just give those a break for an hour or so. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Golden shovel recognizes Exel’s work for Habitat What a community! The crowd of supporters on Saturday morning for the start of the Habitat for Humanity build was great. The family of Henry Exel used the golden shovel to symbolize the work involved. Before Henry died he had set the wheels in motion for this important volunteer work. As a board member, along with Bill Clarke, Henry had seen the wonderful ripple effect of a Habitat home. This is a worldwide wonder, that invites tradespeople and their friends to give their talents in a very organized way. By choosing specific people for detailed jobs, things happen. The folks who took on this challenge were there on Saturday morning on Joan Jacobs old lot with dreams of the completed house. Now we can step in, money is needed as well as vocal and manual support. The Hydro Trust and the Optimist Club handed in some nice cash and the Lions Club has a walk scheduled for October, so choose your method of support. This is a significant thing that is happening in our village, so if this is a new thing for you, just ask and you’ll get a rapid answer about Henry and Bill and their long-term work. You’ll hear about the subdivision in New Orleans, the health improvement from the home in Seaforth and the feelings of worth from the families all over the world who are chosen to live in these wonderful homes. Neil Hemingway is the co-ordinator for the Brussels Build and Keith Mulvey and Ron Clarkson are gathering cash, so a call to them will get you involved.
