‘Double Exposure’ tofeature art of coupleIn the early 1950s, Anne Hamilton
and Tristan Eekhoff met while
taking courses at St. Martin’s School
of Art in London, England. They fell
in love and were married shortly
afterward in 1955.
The young couple was
discouraged by the wartime
destruction that still surrounded
them in their native country. Anne
had spent a few years in the U.S. and
she and Tristan felt that more
opportunities awaited them on this
side of the Atlantic. They moved to
Canada, settling in Windsor, in
1957.
Their mutual love of art helped to
sustain them while Tristan worked in
the insurance industry and Anne was
busy raising their four children.
(Tristan draws a parallel to Charles
Ives, an American music composer
whose insurance business supported
him and his family, allowing him the
freedom to compose music as his
spirit moved him). Though they
moved to London, then 20 years ago
to a farm house near Grand Bend,
they have always had an art studio in
their home.
They have been active in the
Huron County art scene,
participating in studio tours and
having exhibitions in local galleries.
They travel extensively, most
recently to Newfoundland and
Europe and always carry sketch
pads, pencils, pens and water
colours.
Tristan and Anne call their
relationship “symbiotic”. They offer
each other mutual support and
constructive criticism, both in their
art and in their 56-year marriage.
They are each other’s friend and
critic.
The Blyth Festival Art Gallery
will pay homage to these two
remarkable artists with an exhibition
entitled “Double Exposure”, which
will feature drawings, prints and
paintings from their early days
through to this past year. The
opening reception will be held on
Friday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. and the
show will continue to the end of the
theatre season. The venue is the
Bainton Gallery, at the Blyth
Memorial Hall and is open for
viewing Tuesday to Saturday, 10
a.m. to 9 p.m.
The exhibition is curated by Greg
Sherwood and is generously
sponsored by Joan Perrie.

Huron East driver caught drunk
At approximately 2 a.m. on July
30, a Huron OPP officer observed a
vehicle swerving between lanes on
Bluewater Highway at Nile Road.
The officer conducted a traffic
stop and determined the male driver
to be under the influence of alcohol.
The driver was subsequently
arrested and transported to the
Goderich detachment to meet with a
qualified intoxilizer technician in
order to provide two samples of his
breath.
The results of the two tests
confirmed that the driver had a
blood alcohol level that was above
the legal limit of 80 milligrams of
alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
As a result of the investigation,
Michael Janes, 22, of Huron East
has been charged with one count of
Drive With Over 80 Milligrams of
Alcohol. He will answer to his
charge in the Ontario Court of
Justice in Goderich on September
12. His driver’s licence has been
suspended for 90 days as per statute.
Huron East driver charged
On July 29 a Huron OPP officer
conducted a routine traffic stop on
Princess Street in Clinton.
The male driver advised the
officer that he had open alcohol in
the vehicle. The officer searched the
vehicle and located the alcohol. The
search also revealed two bundles of
suspected methamphetamine, as
well as numerous pieces of drug
paraphernalia.
The male driver, Tadd Smith, 29,
of Huron East, and his male
passenger, Eric Fry, 30, of Mitchell
were both arrested and charged with
Possession of a Controlled
Substance. They will answer to the
charges in the Ontario Court of
Justice in Goderich on October 17.
Fast food leads to arrest
On July 28 at approximately 9
p.m. Huron OPP officers received a
phone call about a vehicle with the
occupants inside drinking alcohol
and smoking marijuana while in the
McDonald’s Drive Thru.
The vehicle was located across the
road in the Suncoast Mall parking
lot. An 18-year-old male of Huron
East and a 19-year-old male of
Central Huron have both been
charged with possession of a
controlled substance as a result.
