with her little dogs and reports
getting along quite well going via
the U.S. Construction and traffic
were sometimes slow but she made
it! She enjoyed camping with her
daughter for one-and-a-half weeks
in a beautiful area and hated to come
home. Welcome back Betty!
The area has seen the loss of
several lovely women this past
week. The community was saddened
to hear of the passing of Rev.
Cathrine Campbell. Our
condolences are extended to her
sisters Sheana and Sheilagh and the
extended family. Cathrine was the
minister of Melville Presbyterian
Church for 13 years and a
wonderful, caring and
compassionate person. She always
had a positive attitude and was able
to find a plus to every situation. She
was active in the community and a
great promoter of the village of
Brussels. She will be missed by herfamily, her church family, her manyfriends of the Ag Society,Horticultural Society, Women’s
Guild, Hydro Trust and the members
of the many boards she belonged to.
Our sympathies to all.
The village of Ethel will miss the
smiling face of Jean Evans. Our
condolences to Doug and their
children Bonnie, Cindy and Roger
and their families. Doug and Jean
began their lives on the farm and
then moved to Ethel and had a
hardware store for many years. Jean
helped in the store, raised three
children and was an active member
and worker for the church. She
began a career in the real estate
office in Listowel until she retired.
Jean was always smiling and
pleasant when we would meet and
never was one to complain about her
challenges in life. Our sympathies to
Doug and family.
Our condolences to the family of
Marie Johnston who passed away
last week. She will be missed by her
children Sharon, Sandra, Jane,Tommy and Joanne and theirfamilies. A dedicated farmer’s wifeand hard working lady. Our
meetings would be few and far
between sometimes, but she would
always remember who I was. Our
sympathies to all.
Our condolences to Wilda
Higgins, Wayne and Greg and
families on the loss of husband,
father and grandfather Chester
Higgins. Chester and Wilda started
married life on the farm in Morris
Twp. and then moved to Brussels
many years ago. Our sympathies are
extended to all the family.
Darwin Ducharme and Bev
Stevenson just returned from an
informative and scenic trip to the
east coast. They went by way of
Quebec and toured the Atlantic
provinces of New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia and Prince Edward
Island.
They stopped in PEI for a two-day
visit with former Brussels residents
Randy and Cathy Fischer. They were
treated to a great time touringaround the island. Darwin and Bevreturned to Ontario via the U.S.going through Maine, New
Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
Their trip ended with a relaxing
cruise around the Thousand Islands
which included a tour of the famous
Boldt Castle.
Brian and Brandon McGavin and
Chris and Lisa Stevenson went to
Fort Erie to the 10th anniversary of
Stoll Loader Equipment.
The head company is in Germany
and they celebrated their Canadian
connection with a weekend of fun
and information for their dealers.
The Friday was for fun and the
group went on the Niagara River
whirlpool jet boat ride.
There were 54 folks on the flat
bottom boat and it was really fun.
The second day was an information
day with seminars and product
information.
Chris, Lisa and Brandon had to
return but Brian remained for the
day.
Jeff and Shannon McGavin hostedthe 20th anniversary celebration ofthe graduating OAC class of 1991from the University of Guelph.
There were 30 classmates able to
attend with about 95 on hand for the
supper. The property had many
staying over with campers and tents
up everywhere. They attended from
all over Ontario, the Ottawa Valley
and even one from the U.S. arrived.
Most of the graduates are farmers or
are involved in the farm industry
and/or farm equipment dealers. They
were entertained by having tours on
the fire truck to the sugar bush and
shack, the pond, went fishing or
went swimming in the pool. They
had a great time, great fun and great
memories were shared.
The Johnston reunion was held at
the Wroxeter Ball Park on the
weekend.
Shirley Johnston and family were
the hosts. There were nearly 60
relatives gathered to play
games, enjoy a potluck lunch and
play ball.
Craigs celebrate 40th wedding anniversary last month
Congratulations to Graeme and
Helen Craig who celebrated their
40th wedding anniversary in July.
The couple was surprised to have
about 30 friends gather at the home
of Shannon and Dave Soontiens to
celebrate with them.
Catching up with those in hospital
include Jim Ryan who is in
Wingham Hospital and Doris Jacklin
who is a patient in Listowel. Doreen
Hackwell is a patient in Seaforth. We
wish them all well. Isabel Workman
is now at Braemar and we wish her
well in her new surroundings.
The next round of wedding
showers and weddings is beginning
with a community shower for
Lindsay Shannon being the first.
Lindsay’s shower will be held at
Egmondville United Church
Saturday, Aug. 13 in the afternoon.
Her wedding will be held in October.
The last couple of days has seen a
lot of wild animal activity around the
farm. Upon rising Saturday
morning, our dog was quite excited
and the reason was a raccoon up the
tree in our backyard. The tree is only
about 30 feet from the house, so the
raccoon didn’t last too long up there
and the dog was much calmer.
Monday morning at our son’s place,
there was a much larger wildlife
presence. Scott had two large
coyotes and their nine pups taking a
rest in his yard. His dog had to be
kept inside until they decided to
move on with a little
encouragement. Jim McDonald
reports having made the mistake of
leaving his shed door open and
having a skunk come in for a
sleepover. It seems the wild animals
are wandering closer and closer to
people’s homes.

M-T hires new safety officer
A longtime resident of Bruce
County is the newest Morris-
Turnberry Community Fire Safety
Officer after James Marshall was
sworn in at the Aug. 2 council
meeting.
Marshall, who is 37, is the
Saugeen Shores bylaw enforcement
officer and will be spending four
days a week there and Thursdays in
Morris-Turnberry.
Marshall grew up in Southampton
and recently moved back to Port
Elgin with his wife and three
children.
As a fire fighter for three years,
Marshall said he has been to a lot of
calls and the Morris-Turnberry
position interests him, as he prefers
to keep calls down so fire
departments don’t have to respond
to fires.
Marshall added he will be looking
to find out what the concerns are in
the municipality and address them.
“My goal is to be accessible and
I’d rather give atta-boys than charge
people.”
Marshall said he also wants to
concentrate on fire safety and home
escape plans for individuals.
