On Tuesday, Aug. 2 the BrusselsJunior Tigers travelled to Teeswaterto kick off their playoff schedule.Pitcher Wyatt Machan threw a no-hitter while striking out 13Teeswater batters in the complete six-inning game.Strong defensive efforts were putin by the team, including a highlight-worthy catch by Dylan McNeil inleft field. Connor Bridge, Jarron Thompson, Logan Kellington, Jack Pipe and Machan provided a base- running spark that saw the Tigers leave Teeswater with a well-earned 3-2 victory. In late July the WOAA Brussels Junior Tiger Squirt team finishedtheir season on a high note with awin over Chepstow on July 27.In preparation for the impendingpost season the Tigers sent four different pitchers to the mound. Strong performances were put in by Jarron Thompson, Jessica Johnston, Jack Pipe and Dylan McNeil. The win caps off a very successful season that saw the squirts finish in the top of the WOAA with a recordof 12-0-2.The month of August will be busywith eight playoff games. TheSquirts home games are Teeswater, Aug. 10; Mount Forest, Aug. 17; Mildmay, Aug. 22 and Tavistock, Aug. 24. All game starts are 7 p.m. on the main diamond. Fan support is always welcomed. (Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Golf and Curling Club had a strong finish to a good month of July and August kicked off in a flurry. On Saturday, July 30 the club hosted a 50th anniversary party for Bernice and Gerry Edwards. Around 80 family members and close friends got together in the dining lounge for a roast beef and chicken buffet followed by some dancing and socializing. Congratulations Gerry and Bernice. The Wednesday morning men moved their day to Tuesday this past week and had 22 golfers. Clayt Ruppel took home first-place honours with Jamie Sanderson, second and Warren Rich, third. Ed Daer shot a 38 for low gross and Lloyd Lamont was winner of the longest putt award. On Wednesday, Aug. 3 the club hosted the ladies invitational tournament. Thirty-five gals from different parts of southwestern Ontario enjoyed 18 holes of golf before joining in the dining lounge for a full course turkey supper. Jennifer Baird from the Whistle Bear golf course in Waterloo won low gross for the day while Wendy Harvey from the Maitland Club in Goderich took home the low net award. Marg Webster (WGCC) and Marie Kruiderink (Saugeen) were closest to the pin winners and Fern Wylie (WGCC) and Sandra White (Owen Sound) won longest drive prizes. The ladies had a great day and look forward every year to the turkey meal and Cheryl’s ice cream desserts. The Thursday night men again had a terrific night for golf and 58 of the guys hit the links. Jay Marston, with two eagles, fired a fantastic round of 33 for the best round at the course this year. Jay also won a longest putt award along with Doug Long and Lorne Millen with two. Closest to the pin winners were Jason Curtis and Brett Martin while hidden score prizes were won by Tony Barr, Richard Inglis and Don Watson. Friday’s monthly wing night was a huge success with the girls Jessi and Elyse serving over 900 of our tasty wings. Some of the wing lovers travel every month all the way from Barrie. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the club hosted a stag and doe party for Kirby Skinn and Taylor Jones. Many of the 100 guests took advantage of the scenic view from the patio on a very successful evening for Kirby and Taylor, as well as the club. On Tuesday, July 26 the ladies played 18 holes competing for the McKinley trophy. Several members hit to the links for this handicap event. Fern Wylie shot a net score of 69 to edge out both Maxine Robinson and Luanne Kerr by one shot. The Wednesday senior men had 27 golfers play on a beautiful morning on July 27. Gerry Edwards was the big winner for the day taking home the longest putt award and low net. Lloyd Lamont finished second with Ross Peacock winning points for third. Closest to the pin winner was Ray Walker while Brian Skinn fired a sizzling even par 35 for low gross for the day. Great round Brian! That afternoon the club hosted the past wardens of the area. Organizer Doug Layton had 31 guests show up for a cold plate supper in the dining lounge. The Thursday night men had 57 golfers take part on a hot humid night on July 28. The day was dull and wet until around 2:30 p.m. and again the sun came out just in time to start men’s night. Winners for the night were: closest to the pin, Ken Saxton and Don Edgar; longest putts, Ed Daer, Bill Quipp and Russ Danbrook; longest drive went to Barry Neable. The hidden score winners were Dennis Knox, Ross Peacock and Bob Dickert while Jay Marston shot a super one under par 34 for low gross for the day. Jay has been playing some terrific golf.
