The Blyth U16 soccer squad
participated in the Northern Huron
year-end tournament held in
Goderich from July 25 - 28 and
walked away as the tournament
champions.
Blyth had some really challenging
games to play against some worthy
opponents before reaching the finals.
The first game was against Goderich
on July 25. Blyth took the lead early
in the first half of the game with a
goal by Jan Paul VanDorp assisted
by Hunter Broda. Goderich snuck a
goal in to tie it up. The VanDorp and
Broda duo teamed up again to score
the second goal for Blyth late in the
first half, once again taking the lead
in the game. Blyth played hard in the
second half, but ran out of steam.
Goderich was able to score late in
the game to tie it up. The final
whistle blew and each team was
awarded one point for the tie game.
The July 26 soccer match saw
Blyth and Seaforth play a very
intense game of soccer. Seaforth
came out strong and dominated the
first few minutes of the game
scoring three goals in a row.
Defender Murray Dale finally put
Blyth on the scoreboard with a nice
hard shot into the mesh. Before long
Jan Paul VanDorp took control of the
ball and shot it past the goalkeeper to
narrow the gap in the score. Seaforth
was ahead with a score of 3-2 as the
halftime whistle blew. All players
took a well-deserved time out to
cool down and rehydrate
themselves.
Seaforth came out strong and was
first to score in the second half. The
fans saw the ball going up and down
the pitch with both teams taking
some shots on net. At one point,
there was a lot of traffic in front of
Seaforth’s net. With several players
scrambling to take control of the
ball, it finally bounced into the net
off a Seaforth player’s chest. This
goal gave Blyth some new life as
they only needed one goal to tie up
the game. With minutes left in the
game Broda crossed the ball up the
field. Jan Paul VanDorp worked the
ball toward the net and scored. The
game ended in a tie game with the
score being four goals apiece.
Both teams earned one point for this
tie.
Blyth’s third game was played on
July 27 against St. Columban. St.
Columban should be commended
for coming out to play even though
they were a player short. Blyth
dominated this game and scored
seven goals, while their goalkeeper
Tyler Boven earned a shutout.
Blyth’s defensive players played a
strong game to help their team win
this soccer match. Jan Paul VanDorp
scored three goals, Broda scored two
goals and Rick Pot and Quinton
Sjaarda each scored one goal. Assist
were earned by Leendert VanDorp,
Broda, Sjaarda, Pot and Kody
Tachauer. This win earned
Blyth three points and that was
enough to earn a spot in the playoff
finals.
The U16 boys final was held on
Thursday, July 28 at the Agriculture
Park with Blyth pitted against
Clinton. At the start of the game,
Blyth’s Jan Paul VanDorp worked
the ball toward the net and hit the
post. Sjaarda ran in and caught the
bounce sending the ball into the net
for Blyth. Broda was next to score
for Blyth. After the goalie fumbled
the ball Jan Paul VanDorp persisted
in his quest to score and gained
control of the loose ball and scored
to widen the lead. At half time the
score was 3-0 for Blyth.
In the second half Jan Paul
VanDorp sealed the game with two
more goals. The assists were earned
by Sjaarda and Jordon Button. Blyth
dominated the game and the final
score saw Blyth with five goals and
Clinton standing at 0. Clinton was
unable to get a goal past Blyth’s
strong defensive lineup and
goalkeeper Tyler Boven. All players
stayed focused on the game and
played their positions very well to
earn this win.
After the game the two teams
lined up at the centre of the field.
Clinton players earned a medal for
their second-place finish. Blyth
players earned an individual trophy.
On behalf of the team, Captain Jan
Paul VanDorp accepted the
championship trophy that Blyth gets
to keep for one year.
Blyth U16 players were:
goalkeeper, Tyler Boven; defensive
players, Jordon Button, Murray
Dale, Damion Greidanus, Alex
Peters, Joel Pizzati, Leendert
VanDorp and Trystan Weber;
offensive players, Hunter Broda,
Kody Tachauer, Jan Paul VanDorp.
Absent from the tournament were
Wyatt Bearss, Derek deBoer and
Zach Drost. U14 players Rick Pot,
Quinton Sjaarda and Ben Nonkes
were a great asset to the team during
the season and playoff games filling
in whichever position was needed.
The U16 boys were coached by Jeff
Peters. Peters did a great job
coaching this group of young men,
helping them earn the U16
championship.
