Ginn praises fundraisers
Stop open air
burning: Bedard
A hero’s victory
Victory’s Heroes, a Relay For Life team comprised of F.E. Madill Secondary School students
from Blyth, Brussels and Wingham, was one of the 19 teams that competed at the event last
Saturday. Over $57,000 was raised for cancer research by all 19 teams. Victory’s Heroes, from

Reeve Jim Ginn took time out to
sing the praises of the volunteer
Central Huron Community
Complex’s fundraising committee.
“When you can raise $1 million in
10 months that shows the
community spirit is alive and well,”
says Ginn, who adds a recent
interview with ETM Cable station
reveals there is a noticeable change
in the way Central Huron residents
are presenting themselves these
days.
“We’re getting compliments on
our positive attitudes so it’s nice to
see that change taking place,” says
Ginn.

The Holmesville Hall will be
undergoing some sprucing up this
summer thanks to a
recommendation put forth by
Councillor Alison Lobb.
Lobb recommended the
municipality move forward with the
purchase of new blinds and up to 20
chairs for the hall with a maximum
$3,000 budget.
The funds will be allocated from a
trust fund.

Facilities manager Steve
Campbell and his crew received a
thumbs up from Reeve Jim Ginn for
their role in opening the community
pool earlier than usual and waiving
the usual admission fee during a
recent heat wave.
“I think that was appropriate and
well received,” says Ginn.
Councillors also learned that few,
if any, residents took advantage of
the municipality’s so-called cooling
centres when the temperatures
soared past 30ºC in July, as Clerk
Brenda MacIsaac said no residents
used the centre, which is based at
the Clinton branch of the Royal
Canadian Legion, on the first day
and a full report was not yet
reviewed on the second.
Central Huron Fire Chief Steve
Cooke reports that though
emergency-management practices
call for three days of 32ºC
temperatures before a cooling
station is required, the municipality
went ahead and opened the doors at
the site just to be on the safe side.
Cooke notes that while the
cooling station is only open during
the day hours, the situation would be
different in the event of an extended
power outage.

Central Huron councillors are
preparing to discuss the possibility
of passing a motion that will outfit
them and the appropriate number of
municipal staff with HP Touchpads,
keyboards, and recharging docking
stations in order to do away with
paper agendas.
McLlwain reports the units will
cost about $700 apiece, with the
software costing $7,000, and
between $3,000 to $5,000 in
maintenance each year.
While councillors learned the
items are not budgeted for, they
agreed to allow the cost to be
covered from reserves if they move
forward with the purchases.
Though the presentation was
presented under the subject of
“paperless agendas,” council opted
to move towards the paperless
system several years ago when
laptop computers were purchased
for the council.
THE EDITOR,
Due to the extremely dry hot
weather conditions and lack of rain
in many areas of Huron County over
the past month, the Fire Departments
of Huron County strongly urges the
public to refrain from doing any
open air burning.
Please check with your local fire
department for open air burning
regulations or current fire bans in
place in your area.
Even while plant life may still
appear to be green, and some areas
have received rain, the moisture
content is very low and the
ground very dry and it will burn
readily. Unauthorized burns that get
out of control could result in
unwanted charges to the property
owner.
The Fire Departments of Huron
County want you to enjoy the rest of
your summer and make it a “Fire
Safe” one. Thank you for your
continued co-operation.
