church and went out to food banks
and different groups to help those
less fortunate than them.There were
young people from Newfoundland,
Toronto and Mitchell.
They did not know one another
until getting to Toronto but now have
a lasting friendship. They went to
child care groups and groups for
pregnant teens to talk to them and
listen to their stories. They travelled
on public transportation and this was
an experience for some who had
never rode the subway. This was an
experience of a lifetime.
The choir anthem was another

The offering was received followed

response.
Everyone was invited for coffee
and treats before going home.
NEWS
FROM BLYTH
Many local birthdays celebrated
We’re back from holidays. It is
hard to get back onto the swing
again.
Happy birthday to Rhonda
(Badley) Rickwood who celebrates
Aug. 12 and Graham Jackson, Aug.
16.
Happy 40th anniversary to Niel
and Cathy Edgar of Wingham who
celebrated Aug. 7 and to Joan and
Stephen Caldwell, Aug. 10.
Congratulations to Susan and
Chris Jamieson of Belgrave on the
birth of their son on Aug. 7.
We had a very good time on July
30 with many friends, neighbours
and family who came to help us
celebrate our birthdays. Fred’s and
mine were in January and February
but we celebrated with Doug on his
birthday which was July 30.
The food was good and the
wagging of the tongues were well
practised.

Emergency Services Training Centre nears completion
The Emergency Services Training
Centre (ESTC) renovations in Blyth
will be complete soon.
As of Monday this week, blacktop
was being laid and grass seed was
being added to the site.
Fire Department of North Huron
Chief John Black stated at North
Huron’s Committee of the Whole
meeting on August 8 that both the
seeding and paving are going to be
completed shortly and that the ESTC
would be ready for a September 9
grand opening.
Door-to-door smoke campaign
North Huron Fire Department Chief
John Black said to North Huron
Council that the fire department’s
door-to-door smoke alarm campaign
has been successful so far and because
of the overwhelming number of alarms
needed to be installed the program will
be extended into the first two weeks of
August.
Firefighters are going door-to-door
in Blyth and parts of Wingham
checking for smoke alarms required
by law and placing or replacing them
as necessary.
While the fire department is offering
amnesty during the program, after its
end, they will be back to business as
normal according to Black.
“We will be enforcing the law once
the program is complete,” Black said
to the council.
Black also stated that one disaster
was averted in the area when smoke
alarms they had installed notified
residents of a fire and saved their lives.
ESTC marks Ontario first
The Emergency Services Training
Centre marked an Ontario first last
weekend, holding the first-ever
firefighting course focusing on solar
panels.
“This is the first time that this
information will be presented
anywhere in Ontario,” Fire Chief John
Black said during a North Huron
Committee of the Whole Meeting on
August 8.
Black stated that 160 firefighters
attended the course.
Council hosts trailer park Q&A
North Huron councillors held an
impromptu question and answer period
during their August 8 Committee of the
Whole meeting regarding their decision
to sell a Wingham-area trailer park.
Director of Recreation and Facilities
Pat Newson explained that the trailer
park did not consistently post a profit
and that council felt a private owner,
paying taxes on the land, could turn the
venture into a more profitable one, thus
bringing more people into the area.
Questions about how profitable the
trailer park is was brought up by
members of the gallery, however
Newson stated that some expenses, like
administration and repairs, are not
actually listed in the trailer park’s
sphere on the budget and are charged to
different departments.
Blyth resident Bill Knott wondered
why council would be selling off an
asset that, even occasionally, does carry
its weight when council recently
decided to pump funds and marketing
projects into the municipally owned
airport which hasn’t posted a profit in
recent memory.
Council explained that, aside from
contracts and necessary medical usages
of the airport, they had made their
decision on a case-to-case basis and that
this was the way the direction they were
heading.
The exact means by which the park
will be sold is yet to be determined.

Secret Prayer
(Thomas Brooks, “A Word in Season to Suffering Saints”)
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossian 4:2
In all the ages of the world, the saints have kept up secret prayer. In spite of all opposers
and persecutors, in prisons, in dungeons, in dens, in chains, on racks, in banishments,
and in the very flames -- the saints have still kept up this secret prayer.
A Christian can as well... hear without ears, and live without food, and fight without
hands, and walk without feet -- as he is able to live without secret prayer!
Look! as secret meals make fat bodies--so secret prayers make fat souls!
Secret prayer is the life of our lives--the soul, the sweet, the heaven of all our earthly
enjoyments. Of all the duties of piety, secret prayer is the most... soul-sweetening, soul-
strengthening, soul-enriching, soul-fattening, soul-refreshing, soul-satisfying, and soul-
encouraging duty.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace--that we may obtain mercy, and
find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
