Blyth’s Snells head to Nicaragua for mission tripWhile some summer vacations are
filled with fun, sand and surf, the
Snells of the Blyth-area decided to
go a different route.
The family of four, including
husband and wife Dan and Heather,
son Joel and daughter Rachael, will
be visiting Managua, Nicaragua and
leaving behind souvenirs instead of
bringing them home.
The family, through Presbyterians
Aiding Nicaraguans (PAN) and St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in
Wingham, will be travelling to the
third-world country along with
approximately 20 other missionaries
for August 11-24.
The adults in the group will be
building a Sunday School room and
storage room onto an existing church
while the youth will be running a
sports camp.
“The youths will be running a
sports camp for the youth there,”
Heather said. “They’re expecting 50
to 60 youth, but that will likely
increase.”
“We’re planning on running sports
like soccer and baseball,” Joel said.
The family won’t just be bringing
smiles and helping hands, however,
as local schools have got in on thefundraising.East Wawanosh Public School, through teachers like Lisa Gardner
and Rhonda Culbert, gathered a
hockey bag full of hygiene items for
the natives in the country and Blyth
Public School met Joel’s challenge
of filling a hockey bag with school
supplies, and then some.
“They filled a hockey bag with
papers, scissors, pencils and glue,
and we could barely get it closed,”
Joel said.
The giving hasn’t stopped there,
however, as a lot of neighbours and
customers of Dan’s auto repair
business, Dan’s Auto Repair, have
also opened their hearts and donated
to the cause.
“We really want to pay it forward,”
Heather said. “We’re blessed with so
much here.”
The trip originally started as a
project through the Women’s Group
at St. Andrews, however Joel
decided he would like to attend and
was soon joined by his father.

Meeting the challenge
The Blyth Public School student body was challenged by Joel Snell to put together a hockey
bag full of school supplies and rose above that challenge, getting the bag so full it couldn’t be
closed. Snell, the bag and his family will be going to Nicaragua to do missionary work there.

Use a ‘listening heart’ to know when help is needed
Continued from page 3
young and did not know how to
carry on. Solomon thought his older
brothers should have been chosen as
king and not him.
He needed to know when to send
his army out and when to welcome
them in.
Today we also have the same
conflicts as Solomon in that we
never know when to invite people in
or when to lend a helping hand. We
need to be good listeners. Wisdom
starts with knowing who we are. We
never know what others do until we
walk in their shoes. This heat wave
gives us a sense of what the people
in Africa are dealing with.
Also the disaster in Norway; we
cannot fathom how a man could be
planning such a disaster and
no one noticed him buying his
supplies.
We need to have a listening heart
to those who are troubled.
God has put us here for a reason.
Do not turn away from having a
listening heart.
The choir anthem was another
oldie, “Seek Ye First”.
The offering was received
followed by the offertory response,
“For the Healing”, the prayer of
dedication, the prayers of thanks and
for the world and the singing of The
Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, “This Day God
Gives Me” was followed by the
commissioning, benediction and the
responsive “amen”.
Everyone was invited for coffee
and cookies and fellowship.
