Sheep Clubplays flags,judges lambs
By Zach Drost
The South Huron 4-H Sheep Club
arrived at the Kinsman farm on Line
21 on July 18 for a 7 p.m. meeting.
As they arrived the club members
began with an enjoyable game of
flags. Secretary Amber Brodie gave
the secretary report of the last
meeting. This was followed by the
members judging a class of four
market lambs. Members had to
place this class of lambs based on
their loin, body structure, leg of
lamb and general muscular features.
Each member then explained their
placing and why they were placed in
those rankings.
Afterwards leaders explained the
key things required to have on hand
during lambing season. Members
then displayed the lambing
season kits they had assembled over
the past month. The lambing kits
were numbered and once each
member had a look at the kits, they
were judged and placed. The
winning cases were awarded
with gift cards from leader Deb
Falconer.
The leaders then discussed the
upcoming “Go for the Gold”
competition and judging
competition as well as how to
prepare for each of them. The next
time the sheep 4-H club meets will
be the Bayfield Fair on Saturday,
Aug. 20. Members will get their
lambs shorn in the morning and will
show their sheep in the
showmanship and confirmation
classes in the afternoon. The
meeting was then called to an end
with the 4-H motto, “Learn to do by
Doing”. Members received
refreshments from the Kinsmans.
By Shannon Ryan
On May 25, the Central Huron
Swine Club held its first meeting of
the year at Thompson’s in Hensall.
The club started the night off with
the elections. This year’s president
is Dean Ryan; vice-president,
Shawn Ryan; secretary, Lorraine
Kroes and press reporter, Shannon
Ryan.
Once elections were done, leaders
highlighted 4-H events happening
this year, including the judging
competition on Aug. 9.
Members then got started in their
books. This year’s topic is health.
After some reading members
completed an activity where
everyone had to write down as many
jobs related to the pig business as
they could think of. There are
butchers, secretaries, salesmen,
farmers and so much more. Most
jobs can be related somehow. The
meeting then ended with the 4-H
pledge, “Learn to Do by Doing”.
The second meeting was held at
the Kroes house. At the meeting
members judged tractors and
workboots and each member gave
reasons for their placings. After
the members gave their reasons, one
of the leaders gave the official
placings for the workboots and the
tractors.
Next, members played a guess the
disease game by looking at pictures
and looking for the disease name in
their books and finished the meeting
with brownies and lemonade.
