However the five run lead was not enough as the Barons needed a five run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 13-9 decision over the Zurich Rangers. Darcey Cook also helped with the offence as he collected a triple and two singles. Ryan Clancy was good for a single with Mike McDonald rapping out a pair of singles. Getting single base hits were Mike Bromley, Shawn Bromley, Adam Cronin, Kirby Cook, Dana Doherty and Steve Cook. Scott Bromley started in the pitcher’s circle for the Barons with Dean Wheeler taking over in relief. Senior Barons player MikeMcDonald said they were finallyable to get some hits, somethingthey hadn’t been getting in recent games. He indicated that Scott Bromley’s inside-the-park grand slam was instrumental in getting the Barons to the victory. “The batters who were supposed to drive in runs were doing just that,” he said. According to McDonald, only two Barons struck out in the contest. He noted that Adam Cronin did a great job behind the plate, catching the first game of his career. The Barons play host to the Belmore Stingers on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Blyth ball park. Blyth travels to Brussels on Aug. 3 for a 9 p.m. game against the Tigers. (Jim Brown photo) After managing just five hits in a 4-0 loss to the Stratford Memorials on July 19, the Walton Brewers erupted for 13 runs on July 20 as they soared to a 13-4 decision over the Belmore Stingers in two Huron County Fastball League games played at the Walton ball park. The game against the Stingers was originally scheduled for May 25 but was postponed due to the weather. With Walton holding a 10-4 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning, Barry Young came to the plate with two runners on and smacked a homerun to give Walton the 13-4 victory in six innings. Ron Strome hit a triple and Matt Shortreed hit a double and single. Jeff Robinson hit a double. Rapping out one single apiece were Blaine Marks, Adam Verkley and Scott McDonald. McDonald started in the pitcher’s circle for the Brewers, with Scott Leonhardt taking over in relief. The victory last Wednesday improved the Brewers record to 10-3-1 in league play. Senior player Paul Dolmage said the players had their bats working in the game against the Stingers. “It took a few games, but the bats came alive,” he said. Getting hits for the Brewers against the Stratford Midget team were Scott Cox, Leonhardt, Verkley, McDonald and Kevin Murray. Dolmage started in the circle for the Brewers, with Cox taking over in relief. Stratford pitcher Mike Legace- Roote had 16 strikeouts. “We came across a tough pitcher tonight,” said Dolmage after the game. He noted that the Brewers were able to get hits, but they were unable to get runners on base at the same time. “We are in a bit of a skid, but it will turn around,” he said. The Brewers were in Sebringville last night (July 27) for a game against the Juniors. The Brewers host the Zurich Rangers on Aug. 3 beginning at 8 p.m. at the Walton ball park. On Saturday, July 23 the annual Potty Cup arrived to some sunshine and very hot stick conditions. A record 73 golfers welcomed Potty (Al Johnston) home. This event is a super day for the club among terrific friends who get together to enjoy each other’s company and a few cold “sippers” throughout the day. Gator, Beaver and Don Edgar were the closest to the pin winners with team Edgar and Eric Skinn picking up skins. The day finished with a three-way tie at nine under par for the day among team Darrell Weir from Georgetown, team Edgar and team Potty. The team of Doug Petteplace, Clint Petteplace, Bob Moffat, Brian Flacks and Potty himself came away champions taking home the famous Potty Cup. The boys enjoyed a delicious roast beef buffet in the dining lounge following the golf. Cheryl, Elyse, Jessi and Candace did a stellar job in the kitchen and at the bar. Next Wednesday, Aug. 3 the club hosts the ladies invitational tournament. Anyone interested should contact the pro shop as soon as possible. OUT OF BOUNDS Anyone who has played in the yearly Potty Cup tournament know the true meaning of golf at the amateur level. This fantastic bunch of guys display what friendship is all about and at the same time play some pretty superb golf. Potty Club plays despite heat
