The Citizen, 2011-07-21, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 21, 2011. PAGE 23. Go “Behind the Bars” and meet some of our “Faces of Gaol” on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Huron Historic Gaol. Experience the history as you explore and learn about the life at the Gaol between 1841 and 1911. This interactive event provides visitors with the opportunity to explore this National Historic Site while meeting historical figures from the Gaol’s past. Meet the Gaol Matron as she explains her duties and various responsibilities during her time at the Gaol between 1901 and 1911. The construction of the Governor’s House, the last public hanging, and caring for vagrant prisoners were all part of her experience at the Gaol. Continue through the main floor of the Gaol and visit with James, a prisoner committed for theft although he still claims his innocence. Venture to the second floor cell block and talk to Hannah, an insane prisoner unsure about the length of her visit and when she will be sent to an asylum. Continue your tour as you meet other historical figures who worked and lived at the Gaol as you explore. You can go behind the Gaol’s bars on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. until Aug. 30. Regular admission rates apply (adults $5, children $3.50). The Historic Gaol is open daily throughout the summer for you to visit and tour on your own. Regular hours are Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Huron Historic Gaol is located at the corner of Victoria Street North (Hwy. 21) and Gloucester Terrace in Goderich. Thirty-nine days prior to its annual opening date, Summerworks received news that its federal funding had been cut. The cut amounts to 20 per cent of the festival’s operating budget. Noted Canadian playwright Michael Healey recently appealed to theatres across the country to stage a public reading of Homegrown by Catherine Frid on Friday, July 15. Healey, along with many supporters in the Canadian theatre community, believes that the 2010 production of Homegrown at Summerworks raised the ire of the Prime Minister’s office, resulting in the funding cut. The Blyth Festival’s artistic director Eric Coates says, “Whether or not this play triggered the funding cut is not my major concern, as I have no way of establishing the veracity of such a statement. What does concern me is the notion that arts funding can be withdrawn without warning. The arts are a central economic driver throughout Canada. Like health- care, education, transportation, and sports/recreation, the arts rely on sustained public support to create a flow of revenue that benefits all of us.” Historic Gaol lets people explore ‘Behind the Bars’ Festival shows support for Summerworks A reading to remember Kira Guloien, one of the actors from Hometown, the season opener at the Blyth Festival, took part in a reading of Homegrown, a true story by Catherine Frid about the treatment of prisoners accused of terrorism in Canada. The reading was held to show support for SummerWorks, a Toronto-based theatre company whose federal funding, which represented 20 per cent of their costs, was cut less than two months prior to their opening day earlier this year.
