One homeowner in particular has found sewage in her basement and, through the resulting search for the problem, ACW Public Works Superintendent Brian Van Osch believes the problem is septage leaking from a septic tank being carried by an old tile drain, and gave a report regarding the issue to ACW council at their July 5 meeting. A letter was sent to Van Osch from the Ministry of the Environment requesting action, however Van Osch doesn’t want to commit township resources until the problem has been identified ACW’s. If the tile drain extends to the roadway, which is shared by both ACW and Central Huron, the township will get involved, however, Van Osch doesn’t wish to start the work until the problem with the suspected septic system is found. “Until the domestic septic problem is addressed, we can’t consider work with the storm sewer,” he said. Librarian celebrates 25 years Pat Brigham has seen a lot of changes since she became Blyth’s librarian 25 years ago. She’s seen the library go from a book depository to a multimedia centre, starting with vinyl records, cassettes and CDs and now carrying BluRay and DVD discs. She’s searched for specific books by trolling through hundreds of identification cards and now simply searches on her computer, but, as she explained on the exact anniversary of her starting date of July 18, 1986, the more things change, the more they stay the same. “I love reading time, and getting to spend time with the children,” she said. “And now I’m reading to the children of the children I read to when I started here.” The Blyth Library has gone through some major changes since its inception, and Brigham has been there for all of them. “We started in the little building [on the corner of Dinsley and Queen Streets] where Elliot-Nixon Insurance is now,” she said. “After five years there we moved to Blyth Memorial Hall. “From there, after 15 years, we moved to our present location,” she said. “We’ve been there for about five years now.” Brigham said that the library’s first location was small at 300 square feet. She said that their space in Memorial Hall; 900 square feet, was great, but the library’s current location, which is 1,200 square feet, has really opened up a lot of new opportunities for the library. “We of course have a lot more books, but now we have computers and more space to read,” she said. The change over to digital record- keeping, which Brigham said is great because of the time it saves, isn’t the only digital change that has benefitted the library in Brigham’s time. When asked to share stories, she said she couldn’t put her finger on any specific ones, but did say the addition of new media has brought a whole new group of borrowers into the library, opening it to more people. “We try to keep up with what people are interested in so they keep coming in,” she said. And having those people come in is what’s important to Brigham, as she enjoys the time she spends with people. “I still look forward to going to work every day to read to children and talk to people,” she said. “I have enjoyed my 25 years.” Brigham has worked at the Goderich, Kingsbridge, Blyth, Clinton and Wingham libraries in her time as a librarian and supervisor. A come-and-go celebration will be held to celebrate her 25 years on July 28 at the library starting at 1:30 p.m. Community members who don’t frequent the library may know Brigham from her second job as a mail carrier. Julie Sawchuk, whose husband Theo is helping to plan the celebration, said that Brigham is like a mobile neighbourhood watch while on her route. “She notices when people don’t pick up their mail,” she said. “She saw that one person wasn’t getting their mail, called the family and it turned out he was ill. She looks after people like that.” A quarter-century Pat Brigham has been Blyth’s librarian for 25 years and she has seen plenty of changes in the way people use the library over that time.
