business serving the agricultural
community. They held an open
house and there were hundreds of
folks on hand to see displays, tour
the schoolhouse museum and hear
the speakers. The local 4-H clubs
fundraised by manning the food
booth and for a donation, hot dogs or
sausage could be enjoyed. They
were kept very busy for the time
they were there. The McGavin
family and employees have been
kept busy these past weeks getting
ready and the place looked great.
The family and staff enjoyed a
catered meal at the Bobcat building
following the open house and
cleanup. The party continued at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre later that
evening. Great music and a social
time was enjoyed by over 300 in
attendance. They enjoyed beef and
pork on a bun with pasta salad. The
ladies of Duff’s United Church
handled serving the meal with
Cardiff Catering cooking and slicing
the meat. Congratulations to Neil,
Brian and Jeff and the McGavin
family and staff for a great day and
celebration and all the best in the
next 75 years of business.
If having a 75th anniversary
celebration wasn’t enough, the
McGavin family reunion was also
held on the weekend on Sunday. The
evening was held in Centralia and
hosted by Paul and Barb Storey.
There were approximately 50 or so
McGavin relatives in attendance
including Bill and Liz (McGavin)
Dinsmore, Neil’s sister, from
Brampton. They had also been on
hand for the business celebration on
Friday. Relatives from far and wide
attended including a cousin from
Connecticut for the first time. It’s
great to keep in touch with the
extended family.
Graeme, Helen and Michael Craig
attended the Blue Jays game on
Saturday afternoon. They were part
of a group of 40 or so organized by
Special Olympics Ontario that
boarded a bus in Wingham to head
to Toronto. They saw the Blue Jays
take on the New York Yankies and
suffer a 5-1 loss. They had a good
day, but they were lucky to have
seats in the shady area of the Rogers
Centre on such a hot day.
It is good to see Ed McClure out
and about. He is at work at P&H
doing computer “stuff” for half
days. The leg is still in a cast with no
weight bearing yet, but at least Ed is
seeing a few more people and the
days maybe aren’t quite so long. We
hope his recovery speeds along.
Wedding celebrations were the
highlight of the weekend for many
area families. Walton had two of its
young ladies get married on
Saturday and they both have the
name Katie.
Katie Emmrich, daughter of Clint
and Judy Emmrich, married Ryan
Johnston, formerly of Belleville on
Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Nirthridge
Estates in Ayr. The beautiful outdoor
amphitheatre bordered and
overlooked the Nith river from
where the groomsman arrived by
canoe to the pillared altar. The
lovely bride arrived by horse-drawn
carried to the site to join her waiting
groom. Following the ceremony, the
couple let a pair of white doves go to
signify good luck and everlasting
love. The couple then departed for
pictures in the carriage. Attending
the couple from the area were James
Emmrich, brother of the bride and
Kelly McDonald Jarosz, friend of
the bride, as a bridesmaid. Cousins
Hannah and Emily Uyl were readers
at the service and greeters were
Dawn and Tiffany Uyl. The dark
grey suits of the men complemented
the gorgeous deep purple of the
bridesmaid dresses. Purple and light
blue accents could be seen
everywhere around the estate.
The lovely estate featured a
beautiful terrace and lovely old trees
to provide a cool and peaceful area
to enjoy cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres while bridal pictures were
taken. Guests were also offered rides
around the estate in the horse-drawn
carriage. A unique addition was the
photo booth provided. The guests
were all asked to have their pictures
taken in the booth and a copy of the
pictures were put into an album for
the guests to sign and they received
a copy of their pictures as well. A
great memorable way to remember
all the guests attending. A special
guest attending was Katie’s
stepbrother Eddie, coming all the
way from Australia. A wonderful
meal was served in the wedding tent
and a great evening was enjoyed by
all. The newlyweds will reside in
their new home in Wroxeter.
Congratulations Katie and Ryan.
The second Walton girl, Katie
Williamson, became the wife of
Darren Janmaat at 2 p.m. on
Saturday at St. James Catholic
Church in Seaforth. Katie is the
daughter of Tom and Joyce
Williamson of Walton. The bride
and her attendants, who were
beautifully gowned in red dresses,
arrived by motorhome to the church.
A handsome group of men dressed
in black tuxedos complemented the
girls beautifully. Katie was attended
by her sisters Sarah and Nicole of
Walton and three other friends. The
bridal party travelled to the Lion’s
Park in Seaforth and back to the
home of the bride’s parents to have
wedding pictures taken. The guests
were welcomed to the red, black and
white beautifully decorated hall at
the Seaforth Community Centre for

While Central Huron Council
approved its annual grant budget at
its July 11 meeting, there will be a
review in the future on how those
funds are allocated.
The conversation began out of
news from Councillor Marg
Anderson that the Blyth and District
Community Centre may be
installing user fees for hockey
players who aren’t from North
Huron. Anderson recalled a previous
conversation where it was decided
that if a user fee was installed,
Central Huron would commit funds
to helping area children pay those so
they could keep playing hockey.
Anderson said some children in the
north end of Central Huron have to
play in Blyth due to the zoning
restrictions and this is where they
would commit the funds.
The reason Anderson brought the
issue up was because Central Huron
Council was to approve its annual
grant budget at the July 11 meeting.
The budget was to be approved,
which would leave very little for
user fees for the upcoming season,
which concerned her.
The fund was started when the
OLG Slots were built at the Clinton
Raceway. Ten per cent of the
municipal intake from the casino
were placed in that fund, Reeve Jim
Ginn explained at the meeting, as
several residents were afraid that
with the casino, would come
cutbacks to charitable donations
throughout the community.
As the fund stands now, sports and
other community groups apply to
the fund for a grant, however, it was
proposed that procedure be changed
for 2012, so only children who can
prove financial hardship would be
able to apply for funds.
Councillor Alison Lobb said it
would be unfair to institute the
changes this year, as parents will
have already had their budgets made
and that very often those who can
prove financial hardship are going to
have a hard time hearing about the
program, so council would have to
get the word out.
Councillor Burkhard Metzger felt
grant money could be spent in a
wiser fashion. He said his wife is
involved with Room 2 Grow, an
initiative that helps out single
mothers and families who may not
be financially prepared for a child
and that perhaps that would be a
cause worth donating some money
to, rather than many of the other

The McGavin families would like to say a big thank you to our
customers and friends for making our 75th Anniversary a
success. We would especially like to thank our dedicated staff
and their families for the extra hours and effort in getting done
in time. Special thanks to the Citizen staff for an excellent job
on our flyer and our suppliers and local businesses for
advertising to make it possible. Special thanks to George
Townsend for looking after the kids’ rodeo, KMM Farm Drainage
for supplying apples for lunch and Darryl Bergsma and the 4-H

ladies for the hot lunch at the dance in Brussels. Great
decorating by Carol Reinink, Paul Vandermolen at the shop and
Brett Garniss in Brussels. Abi and Matt at BMG Community
Centre thanks for being so helpful. There are so many more
who played a big part in the event who haven’t been mentioned,
a big thank you! Your friendship will never be forgotten.
