Several local athletes from
Brussels, Blyth, Wingham,
Teeswater, and Lucknow
represented their communities and
Legions at the provincial track and
field championships held last
weekend in Chatham.
Local Legions generously sponsor
this meet annually both financially
and with volunteer workers who
direct, chaperone and officiate the
events. Despite the very hot and
humid weather, there were some
excellent performances by the local
contingent.
Of the nine athletes who trained
locally, eight were finalists in their
events. The nine athletes
proudly returned with six medals:
two gold, two silver, and two
bronze.
Alex Peters of Blyth had an
outstanding meet winning the high
jump with a ‘personal best’ jump of
1.82 metres. In the 100 metre race,
in an exciting finish, Peters claimed
the silver medal. In his third event of
the day, he cruised the 200 metre
race to claim his third medal of the
meet.
Brianna Bird, also of Blyth,
showed her ability as a distance
runner when she ran a very tactical
2,000-metre race leaving her
opponents behind with her strong
finishing kick and claiming a gold
medal. In the 1,200-metre race she
also claimed a respectable fourth
place finish.
Anthony Vader of Brussels
continued his successes of the
season by throwing the javelin 42.31
metres, a personal best for him, to
clinch second place and a silver
medal.
Each year the local Legions in
Ontario organize, sponsor, and work
to promote athletics for young
people in Ontario. Their efforts give
many young athletes the opportunity
to compete at the local, provincial
and national level.
Athletes who achieve one or more
first places at the provincial meet
may have the opportunity to be
selected to a team that competes at
national championship in Ottawa in
August.

Jockeying for position
The Blyth U16 boys were in action on a local pitch versus
Clinton. The young men were able to put their near-by rivals
down with a final score of 4-2 for Blyth. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club, like all the other golf courses
in Ontario, was searching for some
sunshine and the past couple of
weeks, we have definitely found
some. The course remains in great
shape and play is starting to pick
up.
On Tuesday, July 12 the ladies
stepped aside for a great group of
guys from the Atwood area to come
in to celebrate the birthdays of
Doug Rathwell, Bill Quipp and
Doug Adams. The boys played nine
holes before lunch and following
their second nine their better halves
joined them for a steak and chicken
supper in the dining lounge. Many
of the Wingham lady members
enjoyed a good night playing in a
fun scramble at the Maitland
course in Goderich.
The Wednesday senior men had
30 golfers hit the links on a super
sunny morning. Defending points
champ Lloyd Lamont took home
first place honours with Brian
Skinn placing second followed by
Ross Peacock. Don Bone won the
longest putt and closest to the pin
prizes while Ed Daer again fired a
38 to claim low gross for the day.
It was sure great to see the dining
lounge full of Alice Munro
supporters on Wednesday
afternoon as close to 75 family and
friends got together for lunch.
Organizer Ross Procter was happy
with the turnout and thanked Alice
for spending some time with her
many followers.
On Thursday, July 14, 66 golfers
showed up for another great men’s
night. The weather on Thursdays
has been fantastic and the boys are
taking full advantage of their night
out. Jason Goodall shot a superb 36
to capture low gross for the
evening. Other winners were,
closest to the pin, Joel Watson (who
was inches away from a hole-in-
one on the second hole), Dennis
Vath and Ed Collinson. Longest
