Labouring for the Good of Our Soul Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: John, volume 1,~ J.C. Ryle How are we to labour? There is but one answer. We must labour in the use of all appointed means. We must read our Bibles, like men digging for hidden treasure. We must wrestle earnestly in prayer, like men contending with a deadly enemy for life. We must take our whole heart to the house of God, and worship and hear like those who listen to the reading of a benefactor’s will. We must fight daily against sin, the world, and the devil, like those who fight for liberty, and must conquer, or be slaves. These are the ways we must walk in if we would find Christ, and be found in Him. This is labouring. This is the secret of getting on about our souls. Ushering were Laurie Sparling and Nancy Hakkers. Floyd Herman was music director. The call to worship, “Holy Spirit Come” was sung followed by the prayer of approach and the singing of the first hymn, “Jesus Bids The Shine”. The scripture was from Matthew 13: 24-30 and 36-43, followed by the singing of the response, “Hallelujah.” Rev. Gary Clarks’ message to the congregation was, “Of Orchards and Apple Trees”. We often say we can’t see the trees for the forest. A forest is trees growing wild but an orchard is very organized with trees in a straight row and the kinds of apples in the same planting. If a maple tree starts to grow in the orchard it is removed but if it starts to grow in the forset it is allowed to grow at will. Humanity is like the orchard, if someone is different we try to get rid of them. In the scripture, the master is asked if the slaves should take out the weeds from the wheat field? The answer is no, let them grow together and the harvesters will sort them when they are harvested and separate them taking out the weeds and burning them. This was Jesus’ way of telling us that we are all God’s people and should learn to live together. Sometimes the weeds add strength to the wheat of plants. The choir sang another oldie “On the Wings of a Dove”. The offering was received followed by the offering response and dedication, the prayers for the world, the silent prayers and the singing of The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn, “Would You Bless Our Homes,” was followed by the prayer of the families read in unison and the “Amen” response. Everyone was invited for coffee or a cold drink and treats and fellowship. 432 Queen Street, Blyth 519-523-9028 davissharon031@gmail.com Tuesday - Friday 9-6 Saturday 9-5 We also carry Kodak picture maker, helium balloons, souvenirs, museum gifts, everyday items CONTEST FOR ALL AGES Develop your digital pictures in this store and enter your favourite “pet” photo Winner receives a professional framed 5x7 picture matted by the Gift Cupboard ALL PICTURES MUST BE IN BY THURSDAY, AUGUST 18TH Judges – Carol & Jerry McDonnell Blyth church moves service to downstairs to keep things cool
