By Jo-Ann McDonaldIt has been a quiet week aroundthe Brussels Legion Branch but the weekend makes up for it. House Chairman Andy Adams has been busy catching up with a few odd jobs. He has managed to get the air conditioner installed in the upstairs hallway and hopefully it will make a big difference in keeping it cooler upstairs. The fish fry crew was off to the Seaforth Agriplex to do a fry on Friday. They fed 150 and the foursome working were Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald, Lee Ann Konarski and Judy Lee. The prep work for the fry was handled by Deb Caan and Jo-Ann. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 10 tables of players. Winners were: first, Marjorie Mogk and Doreen Skinner, 77 points; second, Pauline and Bernice, 72 points; third, Delores Howatt and Lillian Appleby, 70 points; low, Bill and Faye Albert, 41 points; lone hand, Viola Adams and Ruth Sharpin, seven. The Sunday night singles dance enjoyed the music of the Country Versatiles. There were about 74 folks enjoy the new sound of the band. They have went through a fewchanges with members of theoriginal band suffering some health problems, but they sound great. There is no dance in two weeks, but it will return Aug. 7. The school kids have caught the rhythm and are making the best of these warm sultry days. Only water ready for a swim makes this kind of warmth a pleasure and only children know how to enjoy it with such abandon using only the sun and water as their resources. The voices, enjoying the Lions’ pool every day attest to this. So here’s to the days of summer. Joan Jacobs has just returned from a cruise to Alaska. The scenery with the mountains and water was breathtaking and the different climate zones in that region were a wonder to behold. Trees, flowers and shrubs in full bloom was almost a trick for the eyes when the ice fields were just ahead. Life on a cruise ship is a marvel, feeding, entertaining and housing thousands of travellers on the water, miles from shore. The ordering of supplies must take a logistical talent, but that is not one of the considerations when folks are enjoying their days of leisure. Joan had a good cruise experience but was glad to get home. Granddaughters took preference over Citizen columns for me last week. We went camping at Earl Rowe Provincial Park near Alliston. The weather was just fine for biking, swimming and water play. A tub of water, balloons and children are a great combination in summer. Being girls, they camp different than boys so Ralph set up a tent just for their “things” and that made life less cluttered for all in the trailer. Jordan, Robyn and Jill have great imaginations and so stories around the campfire were a highlight for me. Because we were near to Barrie, Ella and Sloan were able to hitch a ride of couple of times to visit us at the campground. So the cousins did a little bonding, and yes water was involved. The best part of being a grandparent is watching children develop and so times like this with no parents in sight is a joy and blessing. Church holidays put a different gathering of people together for worship, this is a good thing as we all hear the same story and knowing this we still think we all need our own buildings and rules. God must just look and wonder. Put Rev. Peter from Bluevale/Walton in your prayers as his brother died recently in Africa and distance makes this grief even harder. The ball park is a busy spot so pop over and watch the action as everyone from the wee guys to the old folks play ball. Enjoy all the music and plays available in our area, so much to do and so little time – oh well, keep trying. Bye now and take care, Betty G.W. School names to change The Avon Maitland District School Board approved the recommended names from two transition committees for two schools in Huron County; the new school to be built in Wingham and Grey Central Public School. Wingham’s new school will be called Maitland River Elementary School while Grey Central will be renamed North Woods Elementary School effective September 1, 2012. In June 2010, the board voted to consolidate K-6 students from Brussels Public School and Grey Central Public School at the Grey Central Public School site and to consolidate some K-8 students from Blyth Public School and the K-8 students from Hullett Central Public School at the Hullett Central Public School site in September 2012. Transition Committees were established for the school Joyce McLean RN, BScN, COHN(C) Bachelor of Science Nursing Ryerson University (2010) Canadian Certified Occupational Nurse (2011) Joyce is the daughter of Edna Pearson (Ralph), Brussels, ON My Pride...My Joy Love Mom Continued on page 9 Volunteers looking for volunteers Habitat for Humanity Huron County is looking for a few good men, women and children to help with their next build in Brussels.
