The Huron Chapter, No. 89, Order of the Eastern Star celebrated its 89th birthday and has just completed another successful year. With the support of the community for its annual fashion show and draw the group has donated three pieces of furnishings to the oncology department of the Wingham and District Hospital. The staff and patients are most grateful for these gifts. The draw was held on June 14 at the regular meeting. Winners were: first, a hand-painted water colour, Mrs. Bonnie Taylor, Wingham; second, quilt, Mrs. Shirley Steepe, Clinton; third, $25, Mrs. Marj Cook, Wingham. Service pins were presented to Bill and Sandra Clark, 25 years; Audrey Chambers, 50 years and Myrtle Leggatt, 60 years. Birthday cake and ice cream was served and an enjoyable evening was spent. By Brent Kipfer Brussels Mennonite Fellowship About 30 years ago, an American defense contractor had a creative idea for sharing his faith. His company makes combat rifle sights – used by soldiers around the world, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. The contractor decided to stamp Bible verses on his product. One of them – the Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight – was stamped with John 8:12, where Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The Trijicon Reflex sight was stamped with 2 Corinthians 4:6: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” These are wonderful Scriptures. I believe them with all my heart. It is hard to hear the message, though, when it comes stamped on a military assault rifle. The “envelope” carrying the gospel “letter” contradicts it! Thankfully, after public scrutiny in January 2010, the company decided to remove the Bible references. Speaking about his incredible life- giving good news, Jesus once said, “...no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.” When fresh grape juice is put into a goatskin container, it expands as it ferments. The new wineskin stretches like elastic around it. An old wineskin has already been stretched as far as it will go. It may be tempting to keep using it, filling it again with new wine, but if you do, the goatskin will burst as the new wine ferments. Military weapons are part of the “old order” of things that no longer fit under the reign of God. Jesus ushers in a kingdom in which swords get fashioned into plowshares and assault rifles are obsolete. Through his life, and in his death and resurrection he invites us to step into this new reality. It takes faith, of course, to enter this kingdom and live by its principles when the world keeps using old weapons and insisting that they are the only ones that work. On June 28, the World Evangelical Alliance, the World Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church (together representing 90 per cent of the world’s Christian population) released a historic document on the ethics of Christian mission. One section outlines 12 principles Christians are called to follow in order to witness to Christ in a manner consistent with the Gospel – including the need to act in love, live with integrity, compassion and humility, rejecting all forms of violence and offering respect to all people. It is an excellent place to begin. Jesus wants to pour new wine into our world, our communities, our churches and our lives. Are we ready to reject unworthy wineskins and trust him to provide the containers we need to faithfully carry his good news in the 21st century? Immediately after the verse which was written on the Trijicon Reflex sight, the apostle Paul describes the kind of container that actually can hold the gift of Jesus Christ: people like us. Let us drink deeply and share with the world! The Melville Presbyterian Women’s Guild and WMS met at the home of Mary Douma with eight members attending. Elaine Armstrong opened the meeting with prayer followed by the hymn, “Sweet Hour of Prayer”. Elaine’s topic was on prayer. Prayer is communion with God. We should make more time just for prayer. “O Master Let Me Walk With Thee” was sung. Margaret Siertsema gave some thoughts on prayer from a book written by Barbara Hodgins who is originally from Clinton but now resides in the Kippen area. Elaine led in prayer to close this part of the meeting. Alice Marks conducted the business. Jean Bewley read the minutes of the last meeting. Mary Douma gave the treasurer’s report. Leona Armstrong, WMS treasurer, gave her report. The September meeting will be changed to Sept. 13 to accommodate the Brussels Fall Fair. The WMS sectional meeting will be held in Melville, Oct. 4. Alice Marks and Leona Armstrong will conduct the worship for the next meeting. Roll call was “How you celebrated Father’s Day”. Alice thanked Mary for having the meeting at her home and Leona moved adjournment. The meeting was closed with the Mizpah Benediction. Margaret, Elaine and Mary served lunch.
