Congrats
to all the
Graduates
By Matthew
Terpstra
Good evening
graduates of 2011.
I personally would
like to thank my
fellow classmates
for giving me this
opportunity of
speaking at graduation. Writing this
speech was hard to start. So, I did
what every kid my age would do. I
went on YouTube.
Looking at speeches on the
internet, there were funny ones, ones
full of memories, inspirational ones
and boring ones. I didn’t want to be
boring so, feel free to be part of my
speech and applaud to everything I
say.
Congratulations class of 2011.
Remember your first day of
Kindergarten, walking down the
hall. If you can remember that day,
you would remember that most of
the graduating faces were there that
day. Back then, fun was building
block towers or throwing blocks.
Also, in Kindergarten we built
gingerbread houses and sand
buildings. Kindergarten gave all of
us our first taste of graduation. That
was the Teddy Bear Picnic where we
received our first diplomas. I think
we have all changed our dressing
style since then. This time, Mr. Bear
is not the only one wearing a tie.
Throughout these years there have
been soccer games at recess and
games of Army Tag. Those games of
tag always ended up with multiple
people yelling and screaming. Last
one to the tree.
In Grade 7 we met a brave, brave
man named Mr. Wilson. At the time,
Mr. Wilson was new to our school,
and he didn’t know what our class
was like. On April Fool’s Day, that
year we took a joke a little far. After
an outdoor gym class, we thought it
would be a good idea to get Mr.
Wilson wet. We set up a guy with
water bottles full of water behind the
door waiting for Mr. Wilson. Poor
Mr. Wilson was oblivious to what
was happening, walked into the
class and got soaked. Oops. That,
was the last time that we got Mr.
Wilson wet.
This year started on a sour note.
The classes were split. The teachers
probably thought it was a better idea
than we did. We ended off on a great
note with the trip to Camp Celtic.
Celtic was a blast to say the least.
Celtic was full of activities like
swimming, kayaking, hiking, rock
climbing, high ropes and lots of
running. I found that I was mainly
running into branches and swamps
more than trails. Even eating meals
at Celtic was funny, seeing
classmates run around the dining
hall dancing and doing all sorts of
other things.
Throughout this public school
journey, everyone graduating has
shown their own unique skills,
characteristics and personalities.
This mixture of people made this
adventure through Grey a fun and
entertaining one. A fun part for me
was waiting to see if the substitute
teachers would pronounce the last
names correctly, we have a few
tricky ones, and to find out which
twin was which.
Graduates, take a moment! Now,
take a look around the room. Look at
the teachers. Look how happy they
are, I think they are happy for us, or
happy that we are leaving, I’m not
sure which. Now find your parents.
Do you see how proud they are of
you? You can’t imagine the joy they
are feeling right now. So, I think this
is the perfect time to … ask for
money.
Now we are entering the part of
this speech when at least half the
audience has zoned out. The thank
yous. First off, I need to thank all
these teachers and staff members at
Grey. These people dealt with us
throughout our whole journey. They
gave us the knowledge we needed to
get to this point, and on top of that,
they survived the journey with us.
Even when our respect wasn’t there,
they still did their best to help us.
Next, I would also like to thank the
parents. They were by our side since
the day we were born. They also
helped us with our homework and
they completed most of our projects
for us.
Today is not an ending, but a new
beginning. We are being separated
from each other and the comfort and
familiar halls at Grey Central Public
School, as we go into Grade 9 in
high school. Excited or not, it’s
going to happen. In high school
don’t flunk out, try and be yourself
but most importantly don’t forget to
have fun.
Take your final look around this
gym and school because this will be
the only time that you will graduate
from Grade 8. So, try to remember
all the great times here at Grey and
look forward to the future. Finally,
remember to cherish yesterday,
dream tomorrow and live today.
Congratulations class of 2011!
