Congratulations Class of 2011 Used Car & Truck Sales Valedictorian reminds classmates to wear sunscreen By Rebecca-Lynn Lowey Ladies and gentlemen of the graduating class of 2011! Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. – Mary Schimch Today I have the honour of being the valedictorian of our graduating class and I have to say it is the opportunity of a lifetime. We only graduate elementary school once. How am I supposed to fit 10 years of memories into a few minutes? I guess I can start with a saying that a wise man once said, “Understand that friends come and go, but for a precious few, you should hold on.” Our most dominant memories were made with the students and teachers in this room. Most of us were each other’s first friends and we’ve stayed together for years. Don’t you remember our kindergarten days helping each other at our first fire drills? Or comforting each other and staying strong when we came to the horror that the gingerbread man had fled? As children, we thought some events were scary, but still pulled each other through until the end. This is how we bonded our relationships. Even for the silliest memories, you should hold onto. Because even though we are one step closer to finishing our school years, we’re going to miss it when it’s gone and our only memoirs will be the memories. Now look around. The friends sitting next to you are the ones who have shaped you into who you are today. Some people have taught us that you can never have too many articles of clothing or pairs of shoes at school, and others have taught us that ‘Bump’ is definitely the way to go at recesss. Now entering high school, some of us are going our separate ways. Hopefully, our friendships are strong enough to stay with us through and past high school. I hope I have the pleasure of saying I’m still talking to most of you, even in college. We are the kids of ’97. We have been together throughout all of the years. Ten amazing years. We came into Hullett Central Public School as strangers and we’re leaving as friends. The past year has been a blast. We have had so much fun and we are lucky that we stayed in the same classes and stuck together throughout the years. Of course, we wouldn’t have had as much fun without Mr. Coups. He has guided us through Grade 8 and set us up for high school. He has grown to be less of a teacher and more of a friend to all of us. Even if we weren’t fond of him at the beginning of Grade 7, we grew to like him fast and will always remember the great Grade 8 teacher who taught us what we know. The book by Dr. Seuss called Oh, the places you’ll go ties in perfectly to this important night. “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to great places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” Our futures are entirely up to us. We are heading out into the big world, where no one will make the decisions for us, even if we want someone to. We won’t get anywhere waiting for someone to give you the answer. As long as you have your feet in your shoes, you are directing where your life will go. Maybe you don’t even know where you want your life to go yet, but you’ll figure it out eventually, so don’t worry. We still have four years of high school and past that to figure it out and don’t worry if it takes longer than you plan. To finish up my speech, I just want to say that I am very proud that I got to meet all of you. We have developed great relationships over the years and have met wonderful teachers on the way. Tonight is the closing to an incredible journey. And it is also the start of another one. Don’t cry because it’s over, but cry because it happened. Congratulations to everyone. We made it. If we endured 10 years of elementary school, then without a doubt we can survive the next four years of high school. Oh, and before I forget, I just want to stress the importance of sunscreen. Trust me. Hullett Central graduates Hullett Central Public School celebrated the graduation of its Grade 8 class on June 27.
