(Photo submitted) The Blyth Seniors Softball team definitely had their gamefaces on when they took to the field at the Beatrice Jordan Memorial Slow Pitch Tournament. The team, comprised of seniors from Blyth, Londesborough and the surrounding area, left a trail of devastation as they won their way to the podium and first place. In game one, the Blyth Seniors shut-out St. Marys 7-1. Game two saw the Seniors destroy Cambridge 14-1. A team from London provided the only real challenge for the Blyth/Londesborough team, but London still fell 3-1 when the final inning ended. Game four saw the Blyth Seniors taking on home-town Stratford, but even the home-field advantage couldn’t stop the seniors who emerged victorious by a final score of 10-6. John Elliott, one of the members of the team, said that the team has been running for more than five years, and, while they usually do well, they haven’t been able to capture first place in this tournament before. “We have finished in second place for three years,” he said. “We just had a good day this year.” The team must have at least two women older than 55 on the field and two men older than 65, but some of the players find themselves playing in local men’s leagues where the players are as young as 35. The team has also played in the Seniors Games at both the National and Provincial levels in previous years, as well as the Huron-Perth Senior Games, helping to bring home third place for the Londesborough Seniors Group in 2010. The Grizzlies unrelenting assault left the Barons down 10-5 at the end of the game. (Jim Brown photo) Grizzlies double Blyth Barons The Walton Brewers were handed their first setback of the season in Huron County Fastball League play last Tuesday evening and the setback was quite a shellacking. Playing the defending league champions, the Wingham Hitmen, in Walton, the Brewers were handed a 12-3 loss in six innings. Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Walton put three runners across the plate to extend play. However, Wingham scored three runs of their own in the top of the sixth and then shut the door on the Brewers to end the game as the league has a seven-run mercy rule after five innings. Paul Dolmage started in the pitcher’s circle for the Brewers, with Scott Cox taking over in relief. Ron Stevenson had a pair of singles in three at-bats. Jeff Robinson and Scott Leonhardt each connected for a double. The Brewers are in Belmore on Friday for a game against the Stingers. The Brewers host the Blyth Barons on Tuesday, beginning at 8 p.m. Walton travels to Brussels on Wednesday for a 9 p.m. game against the Tigers. The Tigers hosted the Exeter Braves on Wednesday. Game results were not available at press time. Brussels travels to Fullarton on Sunday for a 7 p.m. contest. By Jim Brown The Citizen The golfers at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club finally got the chance to soak up some sunshine last week. On Tuesday, June 28 the senior men put on their skirts on ladies day and enjoyed a great morning. Doug Barfoot finished low net for the day followed by Gerry Edwards and Bob Foxton. Ed Daer and Don Bone both fired 38 for low gross honours. Doug Vanderwoude took home the prize for longest putt. The ladies, who generously gave up their Tuesday morning for the guys, had around 25 gals play throughout the day. On Wednesday the club hosted the Huron County Women’s Shelter Tournament. The 56 girls enjoyed nine holes of golf before joining together in the dining lounge for lunch. Organizer Marilyn Vanderwoude again did a terrific job bringing this group together for a very worthy cause. Thanks Marilyn. Thursday the club enjoyed a busy day with the Wescast night shift kicking the day off with 20 golfers starting at 7 a.m. For most of the guys this was a great start to their long weekend. A group from the Howick Mutual Insurance Company joined together for lunch before nine holes of golf to start the afternoon. The Thursday night men, despite it being a long weekend, had 48 golfers take part. The winners were longest putt, Greg Tiffin and Bill Robinson; closest to the pin, Jason Goodall and Wayne Gordon and hidden scores, Warren Rich, John Nicholson and Tim Hayes. Jay Marston hit a mammoth drive on the first hole to claim the longest drive award and shot a superb even par 35 to shoot low gross for the night. Friday night wing night had some stiff competition with the holiday and fireworks display but still managed to have 40 hungry wing lovers enjoy a tasty evening on the patio. On Saturday, July 2 the club hosted a birthday party for Walter Elliott who was celebrating his 80th. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS This week the Wingham Golf and Curling Club is pleased to have over 50 children take part in its annual junior clinic. It is great to see the smiling kids at the course.
