The Track and Field meets hosted
by the Royal Canadian Legion are an
excellent method of extending the
regular school Track and Field
season. The F.E. Madill Track and
Field team is indebted to the Legion
for offering these opportunities to
local athletes. These meets are made
possible not only by financial
contributions from the Legion
Branches but also thanks to many
volunteers from the Legion who
officiate at the events and who
organize the meets and their efforts
are appreciated.
Each year, the Royal Canadian
Legion hosts Track and Field Meets
at the District, Provincial and
National Levels. The District Meet
has three age categories: 13 and
under, 15 and under and 17 and
under. Competitors in the 15 and
under and 17 and under age groups
who place well and meet certain
performance standards are selected
to advance to the Provincial
Championships. All of the entry fees
for the meets are fully covered by the
Legion and accommodation and
transportation costs are fully covered
for those candidates who are
selected to attend the Provincial and
National Meets.

The golfers at the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club again had to
tolerate wet dreary weather nearly
all of this past week.
On Wednesday, June 22 only a
couple handfuls of diehards arrived
for senior men’s morning to play
through a few scattered showers.
Doug Neil fired a great even par 35
to claim low gross honours. Wayne
Gordon finished with low net
followed by Neil and Bill Johnston.
On Thursday the rain stopped just
in time for men’s night. The
Thursday night crew had 56 guys hit
to the links. The winners were:
closest to the pin, Dan McBurney;
longest putts, Steve Nixon, Wayne
Gordon, Neil Bieman and Matt
Train with Bill Robinson, Jim Ross
and Ray Walker taking home hidden
score prizes. Dave Gamble shot a
tidy round of 38 to win low gross for
the night.
On Saturday the club hosted the
Andy Ste Marie Memorial
Tournament. The 12 teams played in
a Scottish mist the entire day but
managed to finish all 18 holes. The
Hopf family of Eric and son Kevin
and Trevor edged out the team of
Gerry Edwards, Don Bone and
Steve Nixon in a playoff to win first-
place awards. Shelly Haines
(Andy’s niece) and Andy’s brother
Bill took part in the event and were
on hand to present the prizes. Doug
Vanderwoude won closest to the pin
with Kevin Hopf winning longest
drive. Andy was truly a great
member of the club and will always
be missed.
Friday, July 1 the club will be
holding its monthly golf and wing
night.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
Next week starting July 4, the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club’s

Eye on the ball
It was baseball night in Londesborough on Friday night
with the Pre-Mite team from Londesborough taking on the
visiting squad of Holmesville. The sky was dark and
dreary, but these youngsters got to play a little baseball.
