Brussels teen to play in national softball tournament
Ty Sebastian of Brussels wanted
to find some more competitive
baseball to play and he found it with
the Wiarton Red Devils in their bid
for the 2011 Pepsi U19 Men’s
Canadian Fast Pitch Championship
in August.
The team, which took gold in the
Ontario Amateur Softball
Association (OASA) Midget
Fastball Eliminations in Napanee
last weekend, will be travelling to
New Brunswick for the national
tournament which runs August 8-14.
Sebastian said that the
competition in Napanee eventually
became what he was looking for.
“I started playing because I
wanted to find a more competitive
level of play, I wanted to play better
ball,” he said. “The Napanee
tournament was pretty tight once we
got to the finals.”
The Red Devils lost one game in
the double-elimination finals but
had played well enough to get the
first place finish.
“It feels pretty good to play at that
level of competition and to win,” he
said.
Sebastian said he feels he, and his
teammates, played well and is
looking forward to the challenge of
competing on the national stage.
The Red Devils had a very brief
season leading up to the finals,
having had their first game during
the May long weekend.
Sebastian, a student from F.E.
Madill Secondary School, is the son
of Paul and Kathy Sebastian and
grew up playing softball through
Brussels Minor Baseball. He also
plays on the Brussels Tigers fastball
team.

Blyth student shatters track
and field records at OFSAA
Brianna Bird from Blyth ran her
way into the record books during
her bid for glory at the year-end
Ontario Federation of Secondary
School Athletics (OFSAA) track
and field meet and shattered some
records along the way.
Bird, a Grade 9 student at F.E.
Madill Secondary School, has the
honour of being, according to
coaches, the first female distance
runner in the history of F.E. Madill
to medal in competition.
Bird competed in several events at
the high school level, including the
1,500 metre race, the 3,000 metre
race, high jump, the 4x100 metre
and 4x400 metre relay races and the
800 metre race, however her
coaches suggested she focus on her
distance running and she limited her
events for Western Regionals,
WOSSAA and OFSAA.
“I could have gone on in the high
jump,” she said. “But I decided to
focus on my running.”
The decision paid off as Bird took
second in both the 1,500 and 3,000
metre races at WOSSAA which
eventually lead to her third place
finish at OFSAA.
Bird was constantly improving
her times for the 1,500 metre race
throughout each level of
competition, eventually reaching her
personal best of 4:45.69, breaking a
34-year old F.E. Madill school
record. She also obliterated
the school record for the 3,000
metre time, beating it by a full 65
seconds.
Bird also received recognition for
her athletic representation of F.E.
Madill by being presented with the
Junior Girls Athlete of the Year
Award at the school’s banquet
earlier this month. Fellow Blyth
athlete Alex Peters took home the
Junior Boys Athlete of the Year
Award.
The award was given to Bird for
her accomplishments at OFSAA as
well as for her participation in cross
country and nordic skiing.
Bird’s cross country season ended
at the WOSSAA level as, when in
second place, she twisted her ankle
and was unable to complete the race.
Her skiing season took her to
OFSAA-level competition.
Bird thanked both her parents and
coaches for their contributions to
her athletic endeavours, stating that,
specifically, Julie Sawchuk and the
Lyles helped her achieve what she
did.
“The Lyles are retired teachers
who coach the cross country and
track and field teams,” she said.
“They really helped me focus on my
events.”
Bird soars over competition
Blyth’s Brianna Bird broke and set records at F.E. Madill
Secondary School during recent track and field
competitions. Competing at the school level and making it
all the way to the provincial OFSAA competition, Bird broke
F.E. Madill records for the 1,500 and 3,000 metre races as
well as put herself in the record books for being the first
F.E. Madill female student to medal in long distance
running. (Denny Scott photo)
