Rain, hot, cool, dry, work between showers, cut lawn when you can and hope for better weather to come. When the newspaper comes out it will be the last day of school and summer vacation will have started. Many parents are not exactly happy about what to do with the kids all summer, but I can tell you, there are many excited children with big plans for the summer. They are telling me that they are going to Canada’s Wonderland, camping, swimming, working, having a babysitter, helping mom or dad, or “I don’t know”, nothing. I can report that I’m happy to be having a break for the summer from that job and I know that time will fly and that 10 weekswill pass quickly. Happy summer toeveryone. There were some happycelebrations this past week. For theoccasion of Mary Humphries’ birthday, several Walton ladies took Mary out for a birthday lunch. The cruise headed up the east coast of the U.S. and after reaching New York, headed east across the Atlantic to the Azore Islands. It took five days to sail across and it was very enjoyable. The trip toured Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and Holland. When the cruise ended, Margery met a teacher friend in Zurich, Switzerland for a few days’ visit. Margery returned weary but reports By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON NEWS FROM WALTON There were many local folks attending the Buck and Doe for Brad Stephenson and Becky Bylsma at the Listowel Agricultural Hall on the weekend. Brad’s co-workers surprised Brad and Becky with a gift for their new three-acre property and home near Seaforth. They wanted to boost his farming experience and gave him his first little black goat. They are sure that the goat could use some friends to share the barn with, so any donations of more goats would be appreciated. Checking with Brad and Becky first, might be a plan. Our get-well wishes go out to Maryanne Bone who is coming along nicely from her shoulder injury and surgery. Ruth Lowe is feeling better since they drained the infection-filled knee and removed the solid mass of clots that had formed. Both of these ladies are at home and recovering. Ladies still in hospital include Isabelle Workman, Doreen Hackwell and Mary Mann. We are hoping they are coming along well. Our sympathies are extended to the family of Elsie Shaw. Elsie was in her 100th year and had been a patient at Fordwich Nursing Home for just about a year. She will be missed by her surviving children Jim, Harvey, Dorothy and Edith and their families. Our condolences to the family and extended family. Duff’s United Church, celebrated its anniversary service on Sunday. It was the 99th year for the building and the 146th anniversary of the congregation. The near 75 members and friends of Duff’s were welcomed by Gloria Wilbee. She thanked the many involved in making the service a celebration including musicians Marion Godkin, Margery Huether and Phyllis Mitchell, special singers Darlene Vander Veen and Deb Siertsema, those who placed flowers in memory of loves ones, and the cooks outside, Lorne Glanville and Steve Dennis and Judy Valley for the barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs everyone would enjoy for lunch. She introduced the guest speaker of the day and former minister of Duff’s United, the Rev. Randy Banks. Rev. Randy conducted the service with help for Rev. Peter of Duff’s. Rev. Randy read a from a book he has kept for many years, the names of the babies baptized during his four- year tenure in Walton, 1992-1996. He also read from the history book of Duff’s Church that he has kept all these years about the beginnings of our church. His sermon was entitled, “The Church in All Its Might/Mite” and he spoke of how the drawing together of many people is the “mite” to become the mighty. Even the smallest of gifts will be blessed and multiply to become more if all believe in the name of God. Rev. Randy spoke of the joy of living in this community and of the sadness experienced here as well. It was a wonderful service and everyone enjoyed visiting with Rev. Randy over lunch. Announcements include that the church is on holidays the month of July. The month of July has two events for UCW – Blyth Festival dinner and catering the McGavin 75th anniversary late lunch. There were five members of the UCW cater to the first Blyth Festival dinner this past Saturday evening. They fed 31 folks following the afternoon theatre performance.
