Pennants on sale to mark fair
Happy Birthday to us, Happy
Birthday to us! Fly our flag. Get the
red and white clothes and flowers
out all ready to celebrate Canada
Day, the best country in the world.
As much as we complain about
everything from the weather, prices
and taxes, we love Canada. In a fair
discussion we know we have it made
and that we really need to adjust our
attitude and appreciate and celebrate
this life we lead.
Speaking of flags, Don Chesher
has some neat ones to show you.
With the blessing of the Agricultural
Society, the United Church is selling
nifty pennants to celebrate the 150th
year of our fair. Dorothy and the
ladies at Barmy Tech outdid
themselves as they offered four
pennants with pictures of the Palace,
the present public school, Don
McNeil’s jalopy and our pipe band. The clarity of the pictures isamazing. So if you need a souvenirand a flag to wave at this special fair
in September, Don would like to talk
to you.
Summer weekends are such fun.
That is, when you decide which way
you intend to go. Weddings,
anniversaries, reunions and
birthdays were all available this
weekend for everyone to enjoy and
that’s besides just staying home
enjoying the yard.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a busy time around the
Brussels Legion Branch last week.
There are a few updates on past
events. Comrade and Past-President
John Lowe attended the Provincial
Youth Education meeting on
Saturday, June 25 at Ontario
Command in Aurora. John attended
in his new capacity as District C
Youth Education Chairman, being
appointed by the District C
Commander. The portfolio is one of
the biggest within the Legion. The
meeting was four hours and plenty
of information sharing was brought
forth.
The results from the three local
youths participating at the Legion
Track and Field Meet in Guelph last
week are available. Kristen Pipe
participated in the under 15 100-
metre run and finished second in
both preliminary and final run in 14
seconds. She also ran the 200-metre
race and finished second in both
preliminaries and final with a time
of 29.58 seconds. Kristen also did
the long jump and finished seventh
with a jump of 3.88 metres.
Anthony Vader participated also in
the under 15 category. He had an
excellent throw in the javelin event
finishing first reaching a distance of
42.06 metres. He was also first in the
discus event with a throw of 66.6
metres. He participated in the high
jump and reached a height of 1.60
metres to finish fourth.
Adam Cousins participated in the
17 and under age group. Adam had a
very successful jump of 1.75 metres
to capture first in the high jump. He
entered in javelin and achieved a
distance of 32.05 metres to finish
fourth and in the discus event he
threw 26.39 metres to finish fourth
again.
The three athletes competed
against other young people from
Lion’s Head, Kitchener, Seaforth,
Wingham, Guelph, Dundalk, Blyth,
Clinton and Southampton just to
name a few. They report having a
good day and await word on whether
they advance to provincial
competition on July 17.
Congratulations and good luck to
these three young athletes.
The weekend started off with the
gathering of families to celebrate the
50th anniversary of Mel and Lois
McCutcheon. Over 60 family and
members and friends gathered to
enjoy a roast beef dinner at the
Branch Friday evening. There were
many delightful speeches and words
of congratulations extended by
family members and friends. The
McCutcheons have three children,
Wayne, Karen and Steve. An open
dance followed and many Brussels
and area friends dropped in to wish
the couple anniversary wishes.
Congratulations to Mel and Lois.
Helping the Branch with dinner
and the late lunch were Jo-Ann
McDonald, Deb Caan and Mary
Bradshaw and four local boys
helping with dishes for high school
volunteer hours.
Saturday had the usual afternoon
euchre with nine tables of players
hoping to be winners. Results will
be available next week.
Saturday evening was the
gathering of families to celebrate
another 50th wedding anniversary.
The happy couple was Lloyd and
Mabel Glanville. They held a
potluck dinner with nearly 100 of
their families enjoying the great
meal. The Glanville have three
children – Sharon, Teresa and Lisa.
Lloyd and Mabel both come from
families of 10 siblings and there
were six out of 10 Glanville brothers
and sisters and seven out of 10
Westlakes able to attend. They came
from London, Welland, Mitchell,
Manitoulin Island and the Brussels
and Walton area to help celebrate.
Linda Bird was the emcee for the
dinner fun and had five couples play
the newlywed game. The winners of
the game were Lloyd and Mabel –
very fitting that they know each
other so well after 50 years.
A dance with the music of the
John Heaman Band and the arrival
of many of their extended family and
friends made for a very entertaining
night. Congratulations to Lloyd and
Mabel.
The Brussels Cemetery decoration
service was held on Sunday
afternoon with just over 20
attending. The service was led by
Comrade President Deb Caan and
Branch Padre Sandra Cable. The
eight members of the Brussels Pipe
Band led the parade of a dozen
Legion members to the front of the
cemetery for the service. Padre
Cable had a wonderful reflection on
remembering and the names of those
who have passed away in the last
year and are resting at Brussels
Cemetery were read by Padre Cable,
Comrade Caan and Rev. Elwood
Garland, the only other church
representative attending. Following
the service, many wandered
throughout the cemetery to visit the
graves of loved ones. The cemetery
was very lovely with the many floral
arrangements placed in memory of
those resting there. A great job is
being done by Mr. Dale Bachert.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd on hand to enjoy the
music of the John Heaman Band.
There were over 100 in attendance
and a special treat for the night was
anniversary cake served with the late
lunch. Thanks to a tired Mabel
Glanville, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann
McDonald and John Lowe for
helping out for the evening.
