Hittin’ the bongo
Carlene Bremner and her group members spent some time
rapping with their class to the sound of hand-claps and
bongo accompaniment at Blyth Public School on June 8.

School zone should be smoke-free
Bob Pike, who had filed several
Ontario Municipal Board appeals
against the proposed new Wingham-
area public school, is now focusing
on solving problems that could exist
when the school does get built.
Pike approached North Huron
Township Council regarding what he
considers to be a blight around F.E.
Madill Secondary School, the high
school that will share, among other
things, a parking lot and road space
with the new public school; smoking
and smoker culture.
Pike explained that the school
board had a problem with students
smoking on their properties and
decided that, instead of addressingthe problem, they would simplydisallow it on school property, forcing smokers to move onto the
road or onto neighbouring
properties.
Pike spoke of several neighbours
who no longer feel comfortable in
front of their own properties or even
on their own properties because of
the cigarettes, smoke clouds, bad
language and worse attitudes that
seem to have accompanied themigration of smokers from theschool.“My neighbours and I have
complained but the school board is
unresponsive,” Pike explained to the
council. “The problem is that the
school board policy has created the
problem, so they’re not going to fix
it.”
Pike suggested to councillors that

I’m pleased to report that cooking
lessons remain part of our
firefighters’ training. Sunday
morning had lots of customers
ready for a hearty breakfast and the
firehall and its people were ready
for them all. This is a great time to
see the domestic side of some and
the social side of others as the food
and friendship flows for all.
Good job and thanks for the
protection.
We can’t live in Canada unless
we comment on the weather and so
I’m pleased to be thankful for the
fine days of late, time to work
outside with only the mosquitoes to
mutter about.
The remaining school days have
been counted and the plans are in
the works, so enjoy the days head.
