Earlier this month Huron-Perth
welcomed three medical students –
local Lance Freiburger from
Wingham, Colin Mascaro from
Windsor, and Jon Gregory from
Whitby.
These medical students from the
Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentistry at the University of
Western Ontario (UWO) who will be
in the area for six weeks to see what
life as a healthcare professional in
Huron County is all about. All three
students are first year medical
students who are in Huron as part of
HealthKick’s MedQUEST program
which is organized through UWO.
All three students will have the
opportunity to explore clinical
placements throughout Huron
County at agencies such as the
Seaforth Community Hospital,
South Huron Hospital Association,
Grand Bend Area Community
Health Centre, and Huron
community Family Health Team,
Clinton Family Health Team and
Wingham and District Hospital.
Lance, Colin and Jon will also act
as program leaders during the week
of July 4-8 for the MedQUEST
program for Huron and Perth
counties held in Seaforth. The
Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentistry at the University of
Western Ontario has developed
MedQUEST: a strategic
collaborative program to encourage
students from rural Southwestern
Ontario to consider careers in rural
healthcare. HealthKick co-ordinates
the Huron Perth program and will be
hosting it at the Huron East Health
Centre in Seaforth (directly behind
Seaforth Community Hospital).
The MedQUEST program gives
25 high school students from across
Huron and Perth in grades 10 and 11
the opportunity to explore a variety
of healthcare related fields that they
may wish to consider pursuing at a
post-secondary level. During the
five-day program, the students
participate in activities directly
related to specific healthcare
professions and have the opportunity
to meet with a variety of healthcare
professionals and inquire about their
individual occupations. The high
school students will also have two
half-day job shadows throughoutHuron and Perth Counties wherethey can experience firsthandhealthcare fields that they may be
interested in. The job shadows that
the high school students participate
in include professions such as
dentistry, nursing, diagnostic
imaging, dietician, obstetrics, and
much more.
As usual, there will be a Parent’s
Night for accepted MedQUEST
participants’ families to becomefamiliar with the schedule of theweek’s events, and to getinformation on University and
College admissions criteria for a
variety of healthcare professions.
This event will take place on June 29
at 7 p.m. Students will play roles in
a mock disaster exercise that will
provide an excellent learning
opportunity for all agencies
involved.

of time. Skipping steps creates only
the illusion of speed and never
produces satisfactory results, and
making critical mistakes in any of
the phases can have a devastating
impact, slowing momentum and
negating hard-won gains.”
Kotter summarizes the eight
phases in eight steps: 1) Create a
Sense of Urgency, since “Without
motivation, people won’t help and
the effort goes nowhere.” 2) Pull
Together the Guiding Team, as “The
need in this phase is to gather an
initial core of leaders... 3-5 respected
people who lead the effort.” 3)
Create a Change Vision and Strategy.
A successful strategy rests on “a
picture of the future that is relatively
easy and simple to share.” 4)
Communicate for Buy In: “Estimate
how much communication of the
vision is needed, and then multiply
that effort by a factor of 10.” 5)
Empower Others to Realize the
Vision. “Change the way you are
organized to free up people and
put people where the effort needs to
be... remove any obstacles.” 6)
Produce Short-Term Wins.
“Commitment to producing short-
term wins helps keep the urgency
level up and force detailed analytical
thinking that can clarify or revise
visions.” 7) Don't Let Up. As Kotter
warns, “Do not declare victory too
soon. Leaders of change must go
into the process believing that
their efforts will take years.” and
finally 8) Anchor Change in the
Culture, for “In the final analysis,
change sticks when it becomes
‘the way we do things around
here.’” It is important to note the
new behaviours, social norms and
shared values so that all can practise
them daily for others to know and
see.
In conclusion: Kotter writes,
“There are still more mistakes that
people make, but these eight are the
big ones. In reality, even successful
change efforts are messy and full of
surprises.” So where is your or my
sense of urgency in relation to the
life we are called to live? Only you
and I, before our God, know that!
Let go, and in the going, a safe and
joyous journey!
