THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 2011.Milestonefor WI Murray named Huron-Perth Presbytery chair Showing off The third annual Wingham Jets event was held on Saturday at Richard W. LeVan Airport in Morris-Turnberry. Nearly 30 pilots were in town for the event with planes ranging anywhere from $3,000 up to $25,000. One of the high end planes on display was Chuck Storrie’s German kit plane. Storrie, right, was showing his hobby of five years to Mike Emilio that afternoon in hopes that the rain would hold out. (Shawn Loughlin photo) On the afternoon of June 7 the Belgrave Community Centre was the scene of an enjoyable gathering of Women’s Institute members and friends when the local Branch celebrated its 100th anniversary. President Doreen Marks welcomed everyone and spoke of the history and achievements of the Branch. Congratulations and greetings were given by Dianna Robinson, Huron West District President; Bernice Harris, London Area President; Carol Innes, Provincial President; David Riach, North Huron Deputy Reeve and Paul Gowing, Morris-Turnberry Mayor. The guest speaker was Debbie Bauer, Provincial Membership Co- ordinator and a memorial service was conducted by Pat Hunking. Highlights of Belgrave Branch were read by Wilma Higgins. A beautifully decorated birthday cake, made by Janice Marks, was cut by Mary Wightman and the members were each presented with a 100th anniversary pin by Provincial President Carol Innes. Closing remarks and grace were given by Rev. Cathrine Campbell of Majestic WI Brussels. The hall looked lovely with royal blue table covers, vases of blue and yellow flowers and chocolate table favours. A lunch of cake and ice cream was served. Everyone enjoyed a social time and viewed the display set up by Wilma Higgins, the Tweedsmuir History co-ordinator. Rev. Tom Murray of Knox United Church in Belgrave was installed as chair of the Huron-Perth Presbytery at a ceremony on June 14 at Camp Bimini near Stratford. He was elected chair-elect over a year ago in preparation for this position. The Huron-Perth Presbytery, which is part of the United Church of Canada, covers 42 pastoral charges with approximately 60 churches stretching from Stratford to Grand Bend and Exeter to Wingham. The position of chair consists of three different time periods; Murray was Chair-Elect last year, became Chair Person at a recent meeting of the Huron-Perth Presbytery and will become the past chair next year. The three-stage program ensures that there is a chance for learning in the first year, action in the second, and acting as support for the third year for the incoming and acting chair. Murray’s job is to give leadership and direction to the presbytery throughout the year and Murray believes that through picking up some of the themes that the London Conference President and Blyth United Church Reverend Gary Clark set out – riding the wave of change – he can begin to prepare the presbytery for the future. “Churches need to be looking at creating a sense of urgency to meet the needs of today,” Murray said. “You’re either out in the ocean looking for the next wave, riding it, caught in the curl trying to figure out how to get out or back on the beach floundering. The church needs to be sure it’s riding the next wave of the future.” Murray stated that the young people of the church are catching on to this notion with programs like Me To We, a group that encourages helping those around you. Murray feels that any people of good faith need to have a social conscience and take on the changes in the world, regardless of the forum they are in. “We need to confront changes in the political scene and the humanitarian scene and be prepared to face new challenges,” he said. “We need to be aware of what God and creation are doing to this earth and face those changes head-on.” Murray stated that, as the world becomes more of a global village, the church needs leadership that is prepared to stand up and voice its opinions and be counted as humanity has never been involved in a situation like this before. He likens the situation to that of the disciples who hid in Jerusalem during the crucification and then stood up and went forth to spread the word of Jesus. “We need a resurrection of people’s faith today,” he said. “I plan to honour and recognize the people and projects that do that and lift them up as the Huron-Presbytery Chair. “We have to come at things from a totally different approach than years ago,” he said. As mentioned in Murray’s piece on page 12 of The Citizen, Murray feels that the movie Finding Nemo holds important messages for “riding the wave”. “It’s like when Dory and Marlin are inside the whale,” he said. “They don’t want to go into the stomach, into the unknown, but Dory says they have to let go. Marlin asks how she knows something bad won’t happen, and she says she doesn’t.” Murray believes that kind of faith is important in facing the unknown and creating the sense of urgency to do better. Originally from Scotland, Murray moved to Canada when he was 13 years old and understands the importance of learning about a new culture, be it a different nationality or a new wave of thinking. He says he is encouraged by the attitudes of his children and grandchildren who are preparing to catch the new wave and is thankful for what he and his family have accomplished through dealing with the twists and turns of life. On Sunday, June 19 Father’s Day, Kids 4 Christ and others led in worship at Knox United Church. A chicken barbecue followed. The flowers in the sanctuary were placed by the family in loving memory of Gloria Dow.
