On Tuesday, June 14 the ladies got the week off to a great start holding a interclub fun night. Forty girls from Blackhorse, Maitland, Sunset and Wingham played a “happy face scramble” before coming together in the dining lounge for a delicious pork chop supper. The winning team was Debbie Currie, Joyce Adams, Chris Evans (Blackhorse) and Judy Lajeunasse (Sunset). The team of Peg Lockridge, Betty Bateson, Mia Bieman and Stephanie Jacques finished second. Night organizer Maxine Robinson with lots of help did a terrific job putting things together. Thanks Max! The Wednesday senior morning men had 21 golfers hit to the links. Ed Daer was the big winner shooting a superb even par 35. Daer also took longest putt and low net honours. Doug Vanderwoude was second low net with Bob Johnston, third. Don Bone went home with the prize for being the closest to the pin. The Thursday night men had another good showing with 51 golfers, many of whom got drenched in a wild thunderstorm. Most of the boys managed to dry out before finishing their rounds. The winners were: closest to the pin, Bill Robinson; longest putts, Jason Curtis, Ed Collinson, Larry Pellett and Gerald Coghlin. The hidden draw winners were Derrick Connors, Russ Danbrook and Steve Nixon. Jay Marston, despite an eight on the first hole, shot a 38 for low round for the night. On Saturday, June 18 the club hosted the fifth annual Doctor Recruitment Tournament. Fourteen teams enjoyed a fantastic day for golf as well as a roast beef supper. This is for a truly wonderful cause and tournament organizers Doug Neil, Doug Skinn, Verna Steffler and the rest of the committee again did a stellar job. The club would like to thank volunteer Harry George who stepped in to help wherever he was needed. Next Saturday the club is holding the Andy Ste. Marie three-person scramble followed on Wednesday, June 29 with the Women’s Shelter Tournament. Both of these events are still looking for golfers. On Saturday, June 25, the club is also holding a couples dance and fun night in the dining lounge. Limited tickets are also still available. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS It is sure great to see sunshine! The Physical Activity Advisor Program trains volunteers to work on community presentations, energizers and attend fairs and festivals. Their message will be letting people know how they can get more active for their health. Alycia Collins, the Physical Activity Advisor Co-ordinator), says she’s excited to work with volunteers to build the program. “We’re looking for outgoing, energetic volunteers of all ages who love working with people and enjoy being active,” she says. “You don’t have to have any qualifications other than a willingness to learn and a few hours of your time each month.” In order to become a certified Physical Activity Advisor, volunteers must complete a 20-hour training course by attending weekly two-and-a-half-hour evening classes at the Huron County Health Unit in Clinton from September through to November. Once the in-class training is complete, volunteers will do two community placements with the Co-ordinator before coming a fully-certified Physical Activity Advisor. Anyone who would like to learn more about this volunteer opportunity or wants more information can contact the Huron County Health Unit at 519-482- 3416 or toll-free at 1-877-837-6143.
