Local athletes compete at OFSAA track and field
Two local high school students
found themselves competing in
London for the Ontario Federation
of School Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) due to hard work and
perseverance.
Grant Sparling and Alex Peters,
both of Blyth, proved they had what
it takes to compete among the best in
the province, setting personal bests
at the highest level of track and field
events in Ontario.
Alex Peters of F.E. Madill
Secondary School competed in the
100 metre dash in at OFSAA, but
had competed in several more
competitions at the Western
Regionals and Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Athletic
Association (WOSSAA)
At WOSSAA, Peters took first in
the 100 metre dash, third in the triple
jump where he set a personal best
for himself and second in the high
jump.
His relay teams, the 4x100 metre
Midget boys took seventh while the
4x400 metre open boys team took
third and moved on to the OFSAA
Western Regionals.
At OFSAA Western Regionals,
Peters took second in the 100 metre
dash, eighth in the triple jump and
fifth in the high jump.
While Peters feels he could have
competed better in the high jump,
which would have afforded him the
opportunity to move on, the triple
jump was another story.
“I jumped my best in the triple
jump, but I was getting beat by a
metre by other jumpers,” he said.
“The other kids jumped very well.”
At OFSAA, Peters clinched a
wild-card spot in the 100 metre
finals after finishing third in his
qualifying heat.
“There were three heats and the
first two from each, plus the two
with the highest times from the
remaining runners, move on to the
finals,” Peters said. “I was in the first
heat, which was a very fast heat, and
I set a new best of 11.35 seconds and
was one of the two who made it due
to my time.
“I ran the exact same time in the
final and got fourth out of the eight
runners,” he said.
Peters said that he, and his
teammates, decided to show their
support for the competition’s
sponsor, Nike.
“I shaved my head and got a big
Nike swoosh in the back,” he said.
“Everything was sponsored by Nike,
and my teammates had done other
things, I decided to do that.”
Peters was also honoured at F.E.
Madill’s athletics banquet, receiving
the Junior Boys Athlete of the Year
Award for his participation in track
and field, the volleyball team and the
hockey team.
F.E. Madill’s volleyball team won
WOSSAA and the school’s hockey
team finished second at WOSSAA.
Grant Sparling, a senior at St.
Anne’s Catholic Secondary School,
competed in the 110 metre hurdles
and 400 metre hurdles at the
WOSSAA, Western Regional and
OFSAA competition levels,
eventually walking away with sixth
place in both competitions against a
field of 24.
Sparling had led both events at
WOSSAA and taken second and
third place finishes in the 400-metre
and 110-metre hurdles at the
OFSAA West Regionals.
He set a personal best in his
OFSAA run in the 400-metre
hurdles, completing the course in
55.67 seconds.
At West Regionals, Sparling set
his own personal best for the 110-
metre hurdles with a time of 14.67
seconds.
Sparling was his school’s lone
representative to reach OFSAA. He
said that, while he had hoped the
4x400 metre relay team would have
made it, he ended up making the trip
alone.
“It was great to be there,” he said.
“The competition at OFSAA is
always awesome, it’s a great place to
go.”
Sparling achieved a goal he had
set for himself earlier in the year,
intending to break the records at St.
Anne’s for his original four
competitions; the 4x100 metre relay,
the 4x400 metre relay, the 110
metre hurdles and the 400 metre
hurdles.
“It feels good to set the records for
the school,” he said. “That was my
goal and I’m glad I was able to do it
before graduation.”
Sparling thanked his parents and
coaches Baird Robinson and Sandy
Cooper-Ryder for their contributions
to his provincial-quality
performance.

The North Perth Bantam Outlaws
ventured to Simcoe on Saturday and
left town as champions after going
undefeated in minor lacrosse action.
Participating teams in the
tournament were from as far away as
Barrie, Clarington, Peterborough
and Markham.
North Perth opened the day by
downing a competitive Clarington
Gaels squad 8-2. Cole Dannemann
lit the lamp twice on the same shift
and Jarod Logan of Belgrave added
a goal and two assists. Some stellar
forechecking by Nick Kouyoumjian,
Hanover and Curtis Raynard,
Belgrave helped ensure the North
Perth victory.
North Perth next played a New
Tecumseh team from the Barrie
area. A 6-3 victory by the local side
featured scoring by six different
players as North Perth’s fast break
offence started to come into form.
Chipping in with markers were
Michael Ratchford, Mildmay; Alex
Buchanan, Atwood; Mitchell Daw,
Wingham; Steven Gottfried,
Listowel; Owen Mitchell, Wingham
and Dustin Pennington Belgrave.
Kyle Vaughan, Walkerton; Dalton
Goetz, Mildmay; Arden Coultes and
Dalton Carey, both of Blyth all
played key defensive roles in
ensuring the Outlaws a place in the
championship final against the
Simcoe hosts.
Simcoe opened the scoring in the
final only 16 seconds in and showed
they had no intention of losing on
their home floor. A seesaw battle
engaged with back and forth scoring
and the first period closed in a 3-3
deadlock. The second period was no
different as Simcoe continued to
pressure the Outlaws squad and
went up 6-5 heading into the final
frame.
There was no change in the
scoring for the first half of the third
period. Then two quick goals by
North Perth saw them take a short-
lived 7-6 lead only to be answered
by a Simcoe marker to tie it at seven.
Finally, with only 1:46 left on the
clock, Dustin Pennington scored his
third goal of the game on a bounce
shot into the top left corner of the
Simcoe net. Simcoe pressed for the
equalizer but the time clock and
their chances soon expired on them.
North Perth took the title with an 8-
7 final score.
North Perth featured not only the
top offensive squad by scoring the
most goals but also the top defensive
effort by allowing the least goals of
the tournament teams. Goalie Wyatt
Grummett-Curnew, Wingham and
forwards Braeden Ellis, Listowel
and Tabatha Hoggarth, Wingham
played no small part in contributing
to the total team achievement.
Missed from the tournament team
due to other commitments was
Wyatt Schiestel, Blyth.
The Bantam Outlaws are
now finishing up their regular
season and preparing for
the provincial championships in
August.
Outlaws undefeated in Simcoe
It’s hot outside
Some young Blyth soccer players were out on June 14
playing soccer in the village’s U-6 league. This young man
thought it was a little too hot outside to part with his bottle
of water. Ah well, in soccer you don’t need your hands
anyway. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Big win
The North Perth Outlaws lacrosse team came away from a recent tournament in Simcoe with
a win, beating the home team in the tournament final. The Outlaws are just finishing up their
regular season and preparing for the provincial championships in August. (Photo submitted)
