Motocross season has officially begun and last weekend’s
weather was perfect for the fourth round of the CMRC
Ontario Provincial Championship, which was held in
Walton over the weekend. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Adage tested in one week
This last week of weather has
been good and in the farming
community most of the planting has
been completed. Corn and soybeans
are mostly done and farmers with
white beans are working hard at
getting them completed. Some
farmers are incorporating manure
into the planted ground and others
are cleaning up equipment to put
away.
The old saying among farmers to
have a good corn crop, is that the
corn “should be knee high by July”.
Well, there is only a week to go
before the first of July, so hot, hot,
hot and sprinkles of rain at night,
would sure help the corn get there.
Let’s have a little hope and prayer
and maybe it will happen.
Our condolences to the Collins
family on the passing of Dave
Collins. Formerly of Walton, Dave
had lived in the Hensall area for
nearly 20 years. He was an avid
hunter and a devoted family man to
his wife Debbie, his five children
and four grandsons. Dave will be
missed by his many family members
including daughters Colleen and
Val, who many will remember, were
raised in Walton. Our sympathies
are extended to sister Sheron and
John Stadelmann of Blyth and the
many other extended family
members.
Edna Pearson (Ralph) of Huronlea
has returned home from a week’s
visit with her daughter and son-in-
law, Nancy and Murray Procter of
Irvine, California. She was
accompanied by her daughter Janet
and partner Ben Durose of Owen
Sound and her other daughter, Joyce
McLean of London. Nancy and
Murray did everything in their
power to make the trip memorable.
The weather was warm and sunny
but cool in the evening.
The main event of the trip was to
attend the wedding of Edna’s
granddaughter Andrea to Nicholas
Lyle on May 29. The wedding took
place on the deck of the Shoreline
Yacht Club at Long Beach,
California overlooking the Pacific
Ocean. The couple was joined in
marriage by Captain Bill Caplitt.
A dinner and reception followed.
The couple is residing in Orange
County, California. The only hitch
in the trip was a delay in the flight
home. The plane developed engine
problems and had to be replaced.
Edna arrived home at 3 a.m. on June
4 – needless to say a very tired
traveller.
Ian and Brian Wilbee travelled to
Stratford to attend the baptism of
Ian’s great-grandson, Mason
Henderson, on Sunday. Mason is the
son of Scott and Erin Henderson
who reside in Seaforth. The baptism
was held at St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church and the guests were invited
to a luncheon following at the home
of Erin’s parents, Brad and Sue
Murray. Grandparents are Murray
and Carol Henderson of Seaforth.
Congratulations to Jack and
Maryanna Ryan who have moved
into their new home on North Line.
The couple was surprised to have
the family arrive and have them all
moved in without them knowing
much about what was happening.
We hope they enjoy their new home
and find a place for everything.
There were many area folksattending the wedding of Joe Fraserand Heather Little on the weekend.Joe is the son of Lorna and Randy
Fraser and Heather the daughter of
Marlene and Ted Little. The couple
was married in Blyth and will reside
in Blyth. The reception was held at
the Blyth Community Centre and
was decorated in teal and green. The
couple had a wagon ride around
town following the nuptials and then
were delivered to the reception hall.
Congratulations to Joe and
Heather! Ted and Marlene will be
happy the month is over. They had
two daughters marry within three
weeks.
Congratulations to Wes Wilson
and Mandy Workman on their
marriage the previous weekend. The
wedding was held at the farm of Tim
and Maria Walden in a beautiful
sheltered setting. The bride arrived
on horseback for the ceremony in a
gorgeous dress and cowboy boots.
The bridesmaids wore lovely
dresses of turquoise and the
groomsmen had vests of turquoise
and/or black. The tent was decorated
beautifully in a western theme and
the food shed had a white draped
ceiling to accent the event. It was a
lovely day and congratulations to
Wes and Mandy. The couple resides
in Blyth.
It was a beautiful weekend for
motocross at the Walton Raceway
and Lee farm. There were 911
entries, the biggest this year, for the
provincial and qualifying race for
the Grand National race in August.
Riders came from North Carolina,
New York, Michigan, Quebec and
all over Ontario to participate. There
were no serious injuries during the
two-day race and a fantastic job was
done by the Brussels St. John’s
Ambulance brigade. This brigade is
the premier brigade in Ontario for
motocross and we are very proud of
our local members.
Walton’s local rider, Mitchell
Godkin had a great race and finished
third in the MX 2 Jr. race against
120 competitors. Well done! Other
locals riding the same race were
Cody Richmond, Matt Shannon and
Trevor Keyes. They all had good
rides with Cody finishing 16th and
the others finishing the race well off
the pace. Brian Keyes placed 12th in
the over-50 group. Congratulations
to all
The Walton Park had a bit of
sprucing up done last week. New
tile was put around the fence for
safety and other minor repairs done.
Thanks to the Walton area men who
volunteered their time for the
project.
The Walton Ladies Slo-pitch
game was cancelled due to the rain
storm on Thursday evening. The
Walton Brewers played on Saturday
evening at Fullarton Ball Daze.
Every Fullarton ball team played
during the day and a fundraising
barbecue and other activities were
held. The Brewers defeated the
Fullarton team 6-4 and report a good
game.
The annual Craig picnic was held
at the farm of Graeme and Helen
Craig on the weekend. There were
over 45 in attendance including the
oldest Craig, the youngest, Olive
Craig Faitze of Stoney Creek. The
families enjoyed swimming, games
and eating. They also spent time
going over old photographs and
reminiscing. It was beautiful day
and everyone had a great time.
The members of the supper
committee met at the church on
Tuesday evening to discuss
upcoming events at the church.
Group Three will be in charge of the
upcoming Blyth supper on Saturday,
June 25 and Group Two will be in
charge of anniversary luncheon
Sunday, June 26. All groups will be
asked to help for the McGavin 75th
anniversary late lunch on July 15.
The supper committee is still
looking for a co-ordinator for the
group. The job would include
keeping track of the functions and
calling the group to be in charge,
purchasing the necessary groceries
for events and paper supplies and
keeping the kitchen stocked. She
would be the contact person for
church events and would work
alongside everyone for the turkey
supper. If anyone is interested in
taking on these responsibilities,
please contact Karen Hoegy for
more information.
A reminder that church
anniversary is this Sunday and the
service time is at 11 a.m. There will
be a luncheon and social time
following the service. Guest speaker
for the service is a former minister
of Duff’s United, Rev. Randy
Banks. Call your families, former
members and invite your neighbours
to attend and celebrate with the
Duff’s Church family in its 99th
year.
Celebrating birthdays this past

McInroy, Sue Hannon, Adam
