They met at the Branch and then enjoyed a roast beef dinner. They then went for a tour of the former train station, now Optimist building, and then went to Don McNeil’s storage building to peruse his many treasures. Serving the dinner for the group of 28 were Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb Caan and Mary Bradshaw. Comrade Eric Ross, a member of the Branch Executive and Vice Chair of the Tri-District Hospital Committee, spent two days at Lake Joseph this past week. He joined 49 veterans, and 30 caregivers and camp personnel and other district executive members at the camp. The camp, which is the CNIB Camp, is near Parry Sound and the veterans are patients of Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto and Parkwood Hospital, London. They enjoyed crafts, swimming, boating, fishing and dancing at the Mardi Gras- theme evening. It was wonderful weather and they had a very enjoyable time. The fish fry crew was in Wroxeter cooking for the fundraiser for the Wroxeter Hall Board. Helping cook for the Branch were Rick McDonald, Glenn Bridge, Lloyd and Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins and Eric and Christopher Ross. The crowd of nearly 200 enjoyed the meal and their appetites were not dampened by the rain. The Branch sent four comrades to Kingston for the mixed dart competition on the weekend. The Branch had a team qualify at District and this was provincial competition in Kingston. Heading out on Friday afternoon were Ron Schmidt, Daisy Wong, Eric Ross and Jo-Ann McDonald. They arrived in Kingston in time for the men to play the blind draw on Friday evening while the ladies went shopping and enjoyed dinner. The crew spent Sunday morning enjoying a few sights of downtown Kingston. They went to the farmers’ market, which featured mostly “organic” vegetables, a few baked goods booths, flowerstand, meat (organic) and jewellery vendors. There were many busker musicians playing and the youngest looked about 11 playing the bagpipes. They saw the Sir John A. Macdonald locomotive on display in the park and had pictures at the trolley. It was “Doors Open” weekend and the group went on a tour of the City Hall. It was a beautiful old building and they saw the opulent Veterans’ Hall, where beautiful stained glass windows salute every battle engagement that claimed the lives of Canadian soldiers. There are plaques that have the names of those who lost their lives and it was well worth seeing. We had an excellent young student tour guide and she was very nervous as it was her first day, but she was great. She also showed us the library and the artifact room and the beautiful “dancing bear carving” which was made from a whale bone. The dart team arrived at the Amherstview Branch, 631 to start the competition at noon. There were 36 teams of four divided into four divisions. Each team would play eight games and the top team of the division would advance to the semi- finals. Our team played teams from Kapuskasing, Aurora, Toronto, Kingston, Windsor, Lindsay, Brampton and North Bay and got off to a bad start and lost the first game. We rebounded with four straight wins before losing two very close games, with either team needing more than one chance to double out. Adding one more win, we finished with a record of 5-3 to finish third in our group, but not good enough to move on. It was a good afternoon of play and we left immediately for the long drive home. The Branch had four athletes attending the Legion Track and Field Competition in Guelph on Saturday. Participating were Adam Cousins, Anthony Vader, Kristen Pipe and Lanie Smith. We will have results next week. The Brussels Fire Department held its annual Father’s Day breakfast over the weekend and it was all hands on deck to serve the masses. (Vicky Bremner photo) Workman celebrates birthday Well the sparks were flying on Saturday night. A large cake and later a campfire both had the flames flying high to let the world know Frank Workman is another year older, and wiser we think. Family and friends celebrated the fine day with good conversation, good food and much laughter. Atwood, Bamberg, Bluevale and Teeswater were all represented by the guest list, as well as son Peter from Nunavut. I’m thinking Frank planned it, but a very nice milk snake made a quick, impromptu appearance and steered chat in a new direction. So thanks Frank for keeping healthy and celebrating your years with us. Long-term friendships are such a gift. Comfort in company is a fact. Often words don’t need to be spoken and understanding is simple. Frank’s party was our first gathering without Sheila and she was missed. Each person in our lives fills a need and often we don’t realize the importance. If we’re fortunate enough to grow old with friends we have a treasure and each year we have, grows in value. So be the best friend you can, it is appreciated bymany.Kathy and Frank have justreturned from Alberta visitingfamily, Chuck, Delores, Bev, Dave, Doug and families all had a good catch-up with the Cranbrook Workmans. An invitation from my brother Clif and Anne, as well as son Phil gave them a reason to tour to Edmonton. Phil told me that it gave him cause to pause when he saw Workman’s truck parked at Clif’s. Phil knew they flew from Ontario, but the Workman vehicle, in colour and make, was identical to this one in Alberta, a little close look showed a variation in the model.
