A surprise gift
During a fundraiser for Abi’s Awesome Angels, Abi Corbett, right, and Melinda TenPas, left,
were awarded flowers and a spa getaway. The two are cancer survivors and that was what
Saturday was all about, said Lyn Jutzi, centre, co-owner of Brussels Transport. Corbett and
Ten Pas were awarded their gifts before the launch of a Texas horseshoes tournament at
Brussels Transport to raise funds for Corbett’s Relay for Life team, Abi’s Angels. Over $5,000
was raised at the event. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

wind turbines until science-based
and peer-reviewed regulations are
put in place to ensure that public
health and well-being have been
implemented. The motion also asks
that the province restore local
planning regarding renewable
energy projects back to the
municipalities of Ontario.
A letter from Chuck Edey of
Leader Resources was then read to
councillors and the several dozen
people in the gallery detailing the
studies and the concerns he had with
the consideration of such a
recommendation.
He detailed in his letter, however,
that renewable energy projects are a
provincial concern, which made
some councillors question why he
would write to the municipality.
“Why does [Edey] care?” asked
Councillor Brian Barnim. “There
must be some reason he doesn’t
want us to [make this
recommendation].”
Councillor Alex Westerhout said
that the Provincial Government’s
rules on wind turbines were at odds
with several other organizations and
he felt that should be rectified before
the province decided to go any
further with these projects.
“The World Health Organization
says setbacks should be 1.5
kilometres and they’re an impartial
body,” Westerhout said. “We’ve
been told we should look to Europe,
they’ve experienced them and that
makes me think that wind turbines
aren’t as benign as the proponents of
this scheme would have us believe.”
With Reeve Jim Ginn declaring a
conflict of interest and Deputy-
Reeve Dave Jewitt absent, a
recorded vote ended in a 5-1 passing
of the motion with just Councillor
Alison Lobb voting against the
recommendation.
