ACW fire coverage settledFire coverage concerns may have
come to an end for some residents of
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh as
council gave the go-ahead for
township staff to begin re-assigning
911 numbers to different fire
stations.
The new agreement, which would
see Central Huron not cover any of
ACW and see the Fire Department
of North Huron cover area that was
previously covered by Lucknow and
Goderich fire departments is based
upon a mapping system that
determined the closest respondent.
“Taking coverage from Goderich
wasn’t ideal,” Lucknow Fire Chief
Peter Steer said. “[Goderich Fire
Chief] Steve Gardiner wasn’t happyabout it, but it now follows that thequickest department will respond.”Lucknow Fire Chief Peter Steer,
who is also the fire chief of record
for all of ACW, explained that the
majority of the changes to the fire
coverage would follow the idea that
the department with the fastest
response time should always
respond with the exception of some
areas where seasonally closed roads
may change the response time.
The new polygonal call areas will
have firefighters from the Blyth fire
hall responding to fires in Auburn as
well as several kilometres north,
west and south of the former police-
village.
ACW Chief Administrative
Officer Mark Becker stated that it
would still be a long time before thedecision by council to move ahead with the plan sawactualization.
“It will take months to get the
details correct and have the
polygons changed over,” Becker
said. “It would be pushing it to have
the fire departments proposed here
responding to calls by the end of the
year.”
Steer said that some people are
undoubtedly going to be unhappy
with fire coverage, but believes his
plan will work for the majority of
ACW residents affected.
“You’re never going to make
everyone happy,” Steer said. “But if
you make the majority
happy, you’re doing your due
diligence.”

School severance dealt with
A severance on a property split
between two municipalities was
“put back in order” at Huron County
Council’s July 8 Committee of the
Whole meeting.
A property adjacent to the
proposed site of the new public
school in Wingham was the one that
was to be split. The property was
simply split down the municipal
lines, making the portion of the
property in Morris-Turnberry one
piece of land and the portion of the
property in North Huron one piece
of land.
There were some concerns raised
by one of the property’s neighbours
regarding the potential impact of the
property, zoned commercial, among
other effects the property could have
on neighbouring properties.
However, council found those
concerns to be invalid as the
property has been zoned as
commercial for the last 10 years and
there hadn’t been any problems
before.
Any other problems, Huron
County Planner Carol Leeming said,
would be addressed by the
applicants under site plan control.
Morris-Turnberry Mayor Paul
Gowing said the severance was
unanimously supported by his
council and that any objections
would be looked after by the
applicants, so he didn’t see any
reason to deny the application.
North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent
saw this application as nothing more
than a housekeeping issue, echoing
Gowing’s sentiments.
“We’re just cleaning everything
up,” Vincent said. “This just puts
everything in order.”
