Brussels Tigers split a pair of
Huron County Fastball League
games on the weekend, defeating
the Goderich Grizzlies on Friday
evening in Brussels and then losing
to the defending league champion
Wingham Hitmen Sunday afternoon
in Wingham.
The four-run first inning helped to
carry the Tigers to a 10-4 decision
over the Grizzles on Friday evening
at the Optimist ball park in Brussels.
Doug Shaw hit a triple and a
single for the Tigers. Rapping out
two singles apiece were Corey
Campbell, Ty Sebastian and Steve
Scholl. Adam Corbett connected for
a triple while Brian McArter and
Jamie Hocking had one single each.
Sebastian started on the mound
and earned the win. Shawn Dawcame on in relief and earned the
save. Coach Murray Kellington said
it was a good team victory.
On Sunday in Wingham the Tigers
went against the strong pitching
effort of Jason Daw who recorded
10 strikeouts in the game.
Wingham scored nine runs in the
game, but the contest was called
when the Hitmen made the score 8-
1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shaw was 2-3 at the plate and
scored the Tigers only run.
Contributing singles in a losing
effort were Rob Marriott, Jeremy
Daw, Jamie Hickling and Jason
Kellington. Marriott started on the
mound for the Tigers and Shawn
Daw came on in relief.
“We were unable to get across the
plate as much as we would have
liked,” said coach Kellington.
The Tigers are in Wroxeter onFriday as they take on the Rippers
beginning at 8:30 p.m. and June 22,
the Tigers travel to Sebringville for
an 8:45 p.m. contest against the
Juniors.
The Walton Brewers were
scheduled to play the Wingham
Hitmen last Tuesday, but the game
was postponed due to a wet field.
The Brewers hosted the Fullarton
A’s on Tuesday. Game results were
not available at press time. The
Brewers travel to Fullarton on
Saturday for an 8:30 p.m. contest
against the A’s. Walton is in
Goderich on Monday for an 8:30
p.m. contest against the Grizzlies.
The Blyth Barons were in
Sebringville on Wednesday for a
game against the Juniors. Game
results were not available at press
time.

Madill sends 8 to OFSAA
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club against saw Mother Nature
show her power this past week.
From hot sticky conditions to cold,
wet and extreme wind the course
survived despite the loss of a willow
tree and several branches along the
way.
On Tuesday, June 7, ladies day
saw 18 of the girls play throughout
the day in humid weather with
temperatures reaching close to 35°C.
The Wednesday senior men
enjoyed a great morning with 24
golfers hitting the links. Bob
Gavreluk finished low net with Ed
Daer finishing second and Brian
Skinn third. Grant Currie took home
the prize for longest putt and Gerry
Edwards had closest to the pin
honours. Daer’s 39 was good for low
gross while his playing partner Don
Bone was second shooting 40.
Thursday night was men’s night
and there were 51 golfers out despite
the threat of rain and cold chilly
weather. The winners were: closest
to the pin, Doug Neil; longest putts,
Roger Lloyd, Brian Skinn, Perry
Hauck and Dennis Knox. The
hidden score prizes went to Jim
Ross, Wayne Gordon and Alex
Inglis. Trevor Hopf again had a good
night claiming low gross with a
score of 38.
This weekend the club is host to
the Doctor Recruitment tournament
on Saturday with the Andy Ste.
Marie Memorial scheduled for
Saturday, June 25. There is still
room for golfers in these events.
The management and staff would
like to wish long-time employee
Mark Hackett all the best at his new
job in Mark’s hometown of
Lucknow.
OUT OF BOUNDS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club congratulates the organizers of
the well-run Muskrat Festival held
last weekend in Wingham.

Ironmen pick captain
Eight F.E. Madill students were
among over 2,500 top athletes from
all over the province of Ontario who
participated in the Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations (OFSAA) track and
field meet recently on June 2-4.
The three-day event was held
Laurentian University in Sudbury.
F.E. Madill athletes won two
OFSAA medals, set three new
school records, and claimed three
fourth place finishes and one sixth
place finish.
Blyth’s Alex Peters blazed down
the 100 metre stretch to set a new
school record of 11.35 seconds in
Midget Boys event to claim 4th
place in what turned out to be a
blanket finish.
In the gruelling open steeplechase
final, Julie Anne Staehli won an
OFSAA silver medal and set a new
school record time in the event of
5:14.01.

1,500 metre final, in an exciting final
kick to the finish line was able to
win the second OFSAA medal of the
meet for Madill claiming a bronze
medal with her best ever time school
record time of 4:45.69.
In a closely contested Junior Boys
hurdle final, Luke Dailleboust lost
third place by the thickness of his
shirt, a mere one one-thousands of a
second.
In Senior Boys jumping events,
Cole Pellett, in his fifth and final
OFSAA once again brought honours
to Madill winning a fourth in long
jump with 6.72 metres and sixth in
the triple jump with 13.66 metres.
The 4x100 metres Senior Boys
relay team, with flawless passes all
season, had difficulty making one of
their passes and were unable to
advance to the finals. They have
relentlessly lowered the school
record all season and are the first
ever Madill team to ‘go the distance’
in 42 seconds and change 42.96
seconds.
OFSAA marks the completion of
the years high school track and field
competition season. It has been an
exceptionally successful year with
the Madill team winning Huron
Perth, WOSSAA, and OFSAA
honours as well as breaking several
school and Huron Perth records and
laying claim to hundreds of
‘personal best’ performances.
The Wingham Ironmen are
getting ready for the 2011-2012
Western Junior C Hockey League
season.
The team recently named its
captain and one of the assistant
captains for the upcoming season.
Wade Stephenson of Brussels has
been named one of the assistant
captains for the 2011-12 season.
Tyler Kellum of Listowel has been
named the team captain. Both are 21
years of age and will be two of the
four over-agers the team is allowed
to sign for the season.
The announcement was made by
new general manager, Louie
Livingston of Listowel. On hand for
the ceremony were coach Chad
Haggitt of Blyth and assistant coach
Todd Bender of Listowel.
