Dinning honoured
Portraits of Honour makes stop in Wingham
Educated
Students from several local schools, including Blyth Public School and East Wawanosh Public
School, attended, observed and participated in the Portraits of Honour tour held in Wingham.
The Wingham stop was added to the tour in honour of Matthew Dinning, a Wingham man who
lost his life in the line of duty in 2006. The tour will see Dave Sopha’s work; a mural depicting
the faces of slain service members from Afghanistan, displayed from one coast of Canada to
the other. (Denny Scott photo)
Hundreds of students, members of
three Kin clubs, veterans, Legion
members and interested parties filled
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex in Wingham
to pay homage to the fallen
Canadian soldiers involved in the
peacekeeping action in Afghanistan.
Portraits of Honour, a mural
depicting fallen soldiers from the
peacekeeping mission in
Afghanistan, stopped in Wingham
on June 8.
Wingham was the ninth stop in a
tour that will see the mural on the
road until November, and the stop
was inspired by Corporal Matthew
Dinning, a Wingham man who
served in Afhanistan as part of the
Canadian Armed Forces and was
killed in action on April 22, 2006.
Dinning’s parents were on hand to
comment on the mural.
Laurie, Dinning’s mother, said that
it was an honour for the mural to be
brought to Wingham and that
Dinning would be proud to have it
there.
“Matthew was proud to be [a
member of the military police] and
proud to be overseas,” she said. “It’s
an honour to have the Kinsmen bring
it here.”
Laurie went on to say that the
artist, Dave Sopha, was doing
important work.
“[Dave Sopha’s] work puts faces
to the fallen soldiers, not just
numbers,” she said.

THE EDITOR,
The Portraits of Honour National
Tour made a stop in Wingham last
Wednesday. The Teeswater Kinsmen
Club, along with the support of the
Belgrave and Lucknow Kinsmen
Clubs, hosted this event in honour of
Corporal Matthew Dinning and the
other 155 Canadian troops who have
lost their lives in the Afghanistan
mission. Our clubs were very
pleased with the overwhelming
appreciation received from those
who attended this memorable event.
The community support that we
received from Wingham and the
surrounding towns and villages of
Teeswater, Belgrave, Lucknow,
Ripley, Blyth, Brussels, Goderich
and points in between, exceeded all
of our expectations.
There are many thanks that need
to be extended for the support and
assistance our club received to make
this tour stop possible.
Our deep appreciation to Lincoln
and Laurie Dinning for their
commitment to help bring the mural
to town. Special thanks to our fellow
Kin members of Belgrave and
Lucknow who, with busy club
schedules of their own, found the
time to assist in planning and help
out on the day of the tour stop.
We were honoured by the number
of veterans and legion members that
attended from as far away as
Goderich. To our dignitaries, Dr.
Alma Conn from the Township of
North Huron, Lisa Thompson on
behalf of MP Ben Lobb, Jim Saint
from Wingham Legion Branch 180
and Kinette Zone J Deputy
Governor Karen Coutts for their
personal, unique and meaningful
comments.
Our gratitude to the following for
the extra efforts put forth to make
this event a reality; Zone J Kinsmen
and Kinettes, staff at the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex, Wingham Police Service,
Ernie King Music, Dean’s Valu-
Mart, Wingham Foodland, Lewis
Flowers, Wingham Printing Service,
North Huron Computers, Huron-
Bay Co-op in Teeswater, Hillcrest
Central Public School in Teeswater,
piper Bruce MacDonald, the 155
local businesses that helped collect
funds through donation boxes, local
media and finally to the staff and
students who attended from our
locals schools and made
presentations of donations totaling
over $1,000 from their fundraiser
efforts.
To date, over $6,000 in donations
has been received with more
expected in the next few weeks.
These funds will help support the
Military Families Fund, and
established military charities, to
assist families of the fallen and to
assist the thousands of military
personnel who return home with
physical or emotional injuries. Artist
Dave Sopha, his wife Penny and the
entire tour crew were impressed
with our efforts and the community
support. They were particularly
touched and honoured by the over
600 students from our local schools
who attended and made
presentations.
On their departure, they
commented the Wingham tour stop
sets a new template for other Kin
Clubs to follow. We wish them safe
travel as they cross our great country
with the mural. Whether you
attended the event, gave your time,
made donations, in-kind or
financial, our sincere thanks for
helping to support our troops and
honour their memory.
