At the Guelph Area Convention being held in Palmerston on Oct. 12 members are asked to wear red or a red pin in keeping with the theme “Keep Your WI Heart Beating”. The Districts are also asked to have a display on Heart Health. Marg Greig, in her President’s Address, stated she thinks the friendships in the branches helps to keep everyone healthy. Central Huron’s Dave Jewitt said he was comfortable with the formation of the committee to investigate low frequency noise and that any further action would be reaching too far. “I think we’re getting close to overstepping our boundaries. A moratorium goes beyond setting up a low frequency noise committee,” he said. “I believe we created a group to look at the issues and I’m comfortable with that.” Further to his original point, Shewfelt said if council was prepared to pass this motion, that the $50,000 placed in the budget for the low frequency noise committee should then be removed, a sentiment that received support from several councillors, although an official direction concerning the committee was not taken. In fact, a presentation from the committee will be forthcoming at one of this month’s committee of the whole meetings. It was head of the Huron County Planning Department Scott Tousaw who urged council not to shut down the committee. He said the committee has met only twice, but that a report is forthcoming from the Provincial Government concerning wind turbines and low frequency noise. The committee will be preparing a report based on the province’s report. “Right now we’re gearing up to make comments to [council] so we can make meaningful comments to the province,” Tousaw said. “I think there’s a place for that.” The motion was passed with four councillors, Jim Ginn, Bernie MacLellan, Ben Van Diepenbeek and Neil Rintoul declaring conflicts of interest. It was also agreed that a letter should be sent to the Provincial Government and the Ministry of the Environment. Cathy Elliott said the Seaforth BIA has been in existence for 30 years and has evolved over that period. She said it’s important to keep everyone involved. “You have to keep people involved because they’re paying for it,” she said. “There comes a point when you have to educate your membership that you can have all the money you want but sometimes you need manpower,” she said. Projects undertaken include the branding of Seaforth, with the “Seaforth Spirit” logo, used on different products. The BIA came up with “Seaforth smart money” which gives people discounts when they buy in local businesses. The BIA also works a lot with other community groups to make things happen in the community, she said. Despite the upbeat tone of the presentations, spirits were dampened because there were fewer than 25 people present to hear them. The problem of how get all businesses on side with a BIA proposal was raised in questions from the audience. “You have to be in their face and tell it will benefit them,” said Cathy Elliott. Pullen said it would be important to get information out to all commercial property owners to let them see the benefits of the proposal.
