County suggestsfurther research
on energy drinks

than they would normally, becoming
more intoxicated without knowing.
“Your body’s natural defense is to
pass out, but the energy drink
doesn’t let you do that,” Preszcator
said.
Councillor Brian Barnim
suggested council make a
recommendation that the health
effects of energy drinks be further
researched, which was approved
unanimously by council. The
recommendation will also be
forwarded to the Provincial
Government and every other
municipal council in Ontario.
It was also suggested that
Preszcator make her presentation
at the annual Associated
Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
conference in London later this year.
A program for youth, by youth,
called Spark has been revamped and
Huron County Councillors received
a presentation listing the changes
and improvements at their June 1
meeting.
Public Health Promoter and Youth
Engagement Leader for Huron
County Angela Richie spoke to
council regarding the website,
which targets Huron County youth
aged 14-24.
The website, (www.youthspark.
ca) is aimed at answering any
questions that young people in the
14-24 age demographic may have,
in addition to providing them with
an artistic outlet for their writing, art
and photography.
Richie says that many of the
questions under the site’s ‘Ask a
Pro’ section revolve around
relationships, sexual health,
problems at home and issues at
school. She also says that when a
question is posted, it is guaranteed
to be answered within the next 24
hours.
She said the key component of the
website is that it addresses local
issues, something many of the other
websites on the internet geared
toward youth don’t do. In dealing
with Huron County-specific issues,
Richie said, problems can be solved
in a way that is best for a young
person who lives in Huron County.
The site was first launched in
2008, but it has since become
outdated, Richie says and the
relaunch and rebranding of the
website is something that young
people in Huron have been wanting
for some time.
When you’re attempting to get
young people interested, Richie
said, you have to ensure that you’re
always keeping things fresh.
One of the new components the
site will boast, Richie said, is the
‘Share Your Spark’ section where
young people are able to submit
photographs they’ve taken, pieces
they’ve written or art they’ve
produced and receive modest
payment in exchange.
Richie says she’s also hoping to
make further improvements to the
site’s ‘Talk Sex’ section. She says
it’s essential to have an accurate and
comprehensive guide to sex online
for local youth they know they can
rely on.
“There’s a lot of inaccurate
information on the internet,” Richie
said.
Since the site’s launch several
years ago, Richie says it has
received a lot of positive attention
from surrounding health units and
municipalities who hope that one
day they can produce a similar
product for their area.
