THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2011.County calls for regulations on energy drinks Huron County Council is now well aware of the dangers associated with the unregulated sale of energy drinks in the area thanks to a presentation by Public Health Manager Sherri Preszcator. Preszcator, from the Community Health Team, listed adverse health effects associated with energy drinks, both on their own, and when mixed with alcohol at the June 1 meeting of Huron County Council. She also detailed the difficulty in researching who actually answers for these drinks in Canada. She detailed a chart of all the calls made by her team to try and get some answers as to how these energy drinks are being governed in Ontario. Over 12 calls were made before someone with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) was able to provide some facts regarding energy drinks being mixed with alcohol. There are currently no guidelines for merchants to sell energy drinks and the energy drinks that come pre- mixed with alcohol are available at LCBO retail outlets throughout Huron County and the rest of the province. There have, however, been some recommendations from Health Canada advising that energy drinksand alcohol should never be mixed. As a result of that recommendation, bars and other establishments are under certain regulations. These regulations, however, have nothing to do with the LCBO, the representative said. Preszcator said some bars refuse to sell energy drinks in conjunction with alcohol, others will pre-mix the drink for patrons and others will sell a patron an energy drink and a shot of alcohol, leaving the mixing up to the patron. In the United States, Preszcator said, the situation is even more confusing as she passed out several different energy drink cans to councillors. Because liquor is only sold at LCBO outlets in Ontario, this is the only place people can buy energy drinks that contain liquor. In the United States, however, convenience stores all over the country sell both. She challenged councillors to discern between the drinks that contain alcohol and the ones that don’t, which some councillors said was a difficult task. Preszcator detailed the effects of energy drinks which can contain a large amount of sugar as well as caffeine. She said they include trouble sleeping, headaches, irritability, increased heart rate, vomiting, dehydration, tremors and seizures. In rare cases, Preszcatorsaid, death can also be a side effect. When coupled with alcohol, the effects become much more serious, she said. Because of a “loophole” in the system, adding alcohol to caffeine has become legal in the case of energy drinks. It had been outlawed,Preszcator said, but it was allowedwhen the alcohol is being added to a caffeinated drink from a “natural source” which is how most energy drinks are classified. When the two are mixed, Preszcator says that there is an increased awareness and alertness, but a person will still be intoxicated.Because of this increased energy and the lack of the body’s natural defense system when a person is too intoxicated, which is to pass out, people can go on drinking for longer A-Z DRIVERS WANTED PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVERS - RTL-WESTCAN GROUP OF COM- PANIES - RTL-Westcan has openings for SEASONAL AND ROTATIONAL professional truck drivers to join our teams in Edmonton/Lloyminister, Alberta and Saskatoon/Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
